Temporary ponds are natural (or artificial) bodies of water which experience a recurrent dry phase. The defining element is the cyclical nature of the drought, as some permanent or semipermanent waterbodies may dry up in exceptional years.

These are just a few of the invertebrate species collected from my study site at Dragonfly Pond-Meadow last year. Check the link to see more and to hear about the aquatic and terrestrial communities associated with a temporary pond in Jamaica #Entsoc21 #TemporaryWaters

Not them highlighting a Jamaican crab living in water in snails shells 😭😭😭. I have these guys in the lit review of my thesis! I feel so seen right now! I didn't know about waterbending ability though

The first stacked microscope picture I created was of this crustacean zooea (young crustacean) from a coastal rock pool. It was created in January 2020 #TemporaryWaters

@Arhazivory I see "ephemeral" and "dispersers" 👀 #TemporaryWaters. I'm grabbing this paper immediately
This time last year I recorded 6 species new to the pond, 2 of which were new records for their families. It's incredible to see so much aquatic diversity within urban areas #phdlife #temporarywaters
Rain's still going! This morning I found yet another new species in my pond so I'm excited to see what new species pop up in the pond after this rain 😁 #phdlife #temporarywaters
So the area was cut, but the brown patch is due to the pond's presence. This also means all the cane toad tadpoles are gone and the terrestrial phase of the pond can start anew with more nutrients #phdlife #temporarywaters
Interestingly mimosa does not close when underwater, but physical touch still does the trick. These guys were scraping me as I walked through the pond this morning #TemporaryWaters #phdlife #DIF
With the return of my pond also comes the return of the invasive cane toad. If the pond dries out before they mature, then that's a batch of toad eggs eliminated from the ecosystem, and more organic matter added for the plants and insects present #TemporaryWaters #phdlife #DIF
Back in full force: Max depth 51 cm. Area 419 square meters (a tenth of an acre) #temporarywaters #phdlife #DIF
Today we're watching this fly larvae (Ephydridae) wiggle its way across the screen. Ephydridae is a family of shore flies/brine flies. They are found in mud and mats of algae and detritus #TemporaryWaters
