Yesterday, the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague convicted Hashim #Thaci, Kadri #Veseli, Rexhep #Selimi and Jakup #Krasniqi, leading figures of the Kosovo Liberation Army (#KLA), of war crimes, and sentenced Thaci to 25 years. In #Pristina, the reaction is shock, across the public and the political class alike. For most people in 🇽🇰, these four men are not defendants. They are the leaders of the fight for freedom in 1998 and 1999, the men who resisted and helped end decades of repressive Serbian rule that culminated in ethnic cleansing and grave human rights violations. What Serb forces did in #Kosovo is not only how 🇽🇰 remembers it. It is settled fact, established in the final and legally binding judgments of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (#ICTY). The tribunal convicted some of the most senior political, military and police officials of 🇷🇸 and #Yugoslavia of a joint criminal enterprise to change the ethnic balance of Kosovo and secure lasting Serbian control. They pursued it through a campaign of terror: mass deportations, forcible transfers, murder and persecution of Kosovo Albanians. More than 800,000 people were driven from Kosovo between 24 March and 20 June 1999. In one case alone, the court found a single senior Serbian police official responsible for deporting at least 200,000 people and for the murder of at least 724 Kosovo Albanians, most of them unarmed civilians, including women and children. Yesterday's verdict is a first-instance judgment and can be appealed. Every indication is that it will be. But should it stand, many in 🇽🇰 fear what it will do to the story the country tells about its own founding. In any European society, reckoning with the darker sides of national heroes is painful and divisive, even generations later. Britain still argues over Arthur #Harris, who commanded the bombing of German cities in the Second World War. That is why it matters that most of 🇽🇰's international partners and friends, as well as the presiding judge himself, stressed that neither the Kosovo Liberation Army (#KLA) nor its goal of an independent #Kosovo was on trial. What the court judged was the conduct of four individuals. It convicted them of the murder, torture and arbitrary detention of civilians they treated as opponents or collaborators, many of them fellow Kosovo Albanians. International justice is becoming a scandal. Prt #Thaci of #Kosovo appeared at the Hague tribunal in Nov. 2020. We are now in his fifth year of imprisonment. If he is declared innocent, a part of his life will have been stolen from him. But judges enjoyed weekends & vacations.
