Loneliness isn't a niche issue anymore โ it's a national crisis touching health, jobs, and democracy itself.
In a recent op-ed for #TheCommons, Aaron Hurst of the US Chamber of Connection makes the case that philanthropy needs to fund social connection the way it once funded the environmental movement: with real infrastructure, real dollars, and real urgency.
"Now philanthropy must decide whether it will take the lead in addressing the problem โ and rebuilding the opportunities for connection on which a healthy, functioning democracy depends."

Opinion: A third of America's youth avoid listening to people they disagree with. Two former high school debate partners are betting on college presidents to change that.

Opinion: The IRS doesn't have a funding category for social connection. The federal budget doesn't either. That's partly why a crisis affecting more than half of U.S. adults keeps slipping through philanthropy's cracks.

Democracy funders say they want to bridge divides โ so why don't more of them know how?
In a new opinion piece for #TheCommons, Benjamin Chou of the Packard Foundation makes the case that philanthropy is underfunding the cross-ideological work needed to protect democratic norms.
"Even grant makers who are open to this work often don't know whom to fund or how to do it without compromising their reputation and relationships," he writes.

After a decade of record spending to defend American democracy, trust in our institutions is at historic lows. What went wrong โ and what should funders do differently?
In a new op-ed for #TheCommons, Rachel Pritzker, chair of the Democracy Funders Network, offers a candid self-critique of the field she helped build:
"I've come to believe that democracy is not a battle to be fought and won. It's just the ongoing work of figuring out how we Americans can live together more productively and build a positive vision for our nation's future."

America may be less divided than we think. Research shows our disagreements are often amplified by media and politicians. The Chronicle's series The Commons explores what that means for nonprofits. https://t.co/iOAqiQduIF

Opinion: The U.S. men's national soccer team weaves faith into its daily rhythms โ from Ramadan meals to locker-room Bible study โ not as a nod to inclusion, but because that's how you help every player contribute fully.
In his latest column for #TheCommons, @EbooPatel argues this is exactly the model nonprofit and foundation leaders need: institutions that don't just proclaim a commitment to diversity, but turn it into cooperation around a shared mission.
