The fastest recorded ascent of the Col du Tourmalet in Tour de France history is 45 minutes and 11 seconds, set by Jonas Vingegaard (with Tadej Pogačar matching the elite performance) on Stage 6 in 2023.
Details:
Climb: Eastern side (from Sainte-Marie-de-Campan / Campan side), the version most commonly used for records and timing in the Tour. Approximately 17.0 km long at an average gradient of 7.4%, with 1,264 m of elevation gain and high altitude (summit over 2,115 m / 6,940 ft).
2023 Stage 6 Route Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque:
Vingegaard and Pogačar (riding together for much of the key upper sections after Jumbo-Visma pacing) shattered the previous long-standing record on this side. Vingegaard attacked on the steeper upper slopes; Pogačar stayed with him. Vingegaard crested first and earned the Souvenir Jacques Goddet prize for being first over the top. It was not a summit finish the stage continued with a long descent and another climb.
Previous Record:
The mark they broke was 45 minutes 48 seconds, set by Tony Rominger and Zenon Jaskuła in the 1993 Tour de France on the same eastern side. This had stood for about 30 years.
Slight variations in reported 2023 times likely come from exact timing points (official race data vs. power meter/Strava segments starting at the precise base or KOM marker). The detailed performance analysis from Lanterne Rouge cites 45:11 for Vingegaard as the record time, achieved with strong power output (6.01 W/kg overall for the climb, spiking much higher in the final steep sections) aided by favorable conditions like a tailwind on parts of the ascent.
This stands as the benchmark for the fastest time a rider has crossed the top of the Col du Tourmalet in the long history of the Tour de France. Future editions (such as the anticipated 2026 stage featuring it) could see it challenged again.
