Last week, I had the privilege of seeing the power of traditional leadership to revitalise rural economies. I also joined UNESCO and its partners as they discussed harmful online content, keeping people safe and freedom of expression in South Africa.
🎓 Strengthening governance at NEMISA to grow digital skills training
I joined the annual general meeting of the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA) on Tuesday.
It was a robust meeting in which I received an update on NEMISA’s performance, its challenges and how the leadership team plans to deal with some of these.
NEMISA is crucial to the success of developing future-fit digital skills, a key priority of the Department of Communications & Digital.
💻 Making the internet safer while protecting free expression
I had the honour of addressing the launch of the National Study: Governance of Online Harmful Content and Freedom of Expression in South Africa report on Thursday morning.
The event was convened by UNESCO, in partnership with Research ICT Africa, Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, UNESCO Information for All Programme Committee, UNESCO National Commission for South Africa and the Social Media 4 Peace South Africa Coalition.
The forum's focus aligns with two of my key priorities: affordable and reliable universal access to the internet; and creating safe online environments, particularly for vulnerable communities such as women and children.
Creating safe online spaces needs government, social media platforms, technology companies, civil society, academia and the public to work together to fight online harm, misinformation and disinformation.
📡 Seeing village economies grow
I honoured an invitation from Kgosana Dr Koketso Rakhudu (Chief of Tsitsing – Kgotla Ya Rakhudu) to attend the Village Economy Indaba Re-Purposed Summit 2026.
It’s heartening to see visionary traditional leaders working so tirelessly for the upliftment of their communities.
I spoke about how collaboration between traditional authorities and government matters and why it's key for bringing broadband connectivity to rural communities.
Access to meaningful connectivity in villages is essential to empower communities with economic opportunities for a better life.

This week, my work reflected our continued drive to build a more connected, inclusive and secure digital South Africa. A number of the entities under my portfolio held their annual general meetings. These AGMs are an important step in ensuring the institutions operate efficiently and fulfill their mandates.
I had the privilege of speaking at the inaugural AI, Youth & Future of Work Summit convened by the South African Digital Governance Forum. My keynote address focused on how we can use digital technologies & AI to close the inequality gap, with an emphasis on leveraging the benefits of AI to unlock opportunities, foster innovation
and optimise efficiency.
On Wednesday, I started the important process of crafting the Department’s 2027/28 Annual Performance Plan with a series of internal deliberations. I met the core leadership of each of the @CommsZA’s branches. The annual plans drive our daily performance and ensure we remain on track to meet our strategic objectives.

This week, the focus was efforts to explore strategic initiatives which could elevate South Africa’s status as a leading player in global connectivity and giving more people access to digital skills.
📱 Digital skills to fight GBV
I was in Tzaneen last week where I addressed over 100 women from
community and non-profit organisation who received digital skills training provided by the Film & Publications Board and the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa.
The training formed part of the
Department’s Gender-based Violence and Femicide Awareness Programme.
🌊How SA can ride the wave of undersea
cables for economic growth
I met with the leadership of the Digital
Council and officials from Operation
Vulindlela to set in motion collaboration on regulatory reform initiatives to grow our digital economy with the aim of positioning South Africa as a global submarine cable & digital infrastructure hub.
South Africa's geographic position creates an opportunity to become a strategic alternative global connectivity hub & digital gateway between Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Australia.
The initiative holds the potential to drive
investment in South Africa, economic
growth, digital transformation and job
creation opportunities.
