Stop telling Kenyans that “the unity of the country is greater than individual interests.” That is a dangerous excuse when used to silence legitimate demands for democracy. The unity of Kenya is not greater than the constitutional right of every citizen to a free, fair, credible and transparent election. We will not be lectured about peace while the electoral process is compromised. We will not be asked to celebrate “stability” when citizens cannot trust the ballot. And we will not be told to accept injustice in the name of national unity. Peace is not the absence of protest. Stability is not the silence of an oppressed people. Unity is not obedience to electoral injustice. If you want Kenyans to embrace peace, protect the ballot. If you want stability, guarantee electoral justice. If you want national unity, respect the will of the people. Otherwise, don't preach peace to us. There will be no genuine peace without a free and fair election.
