#MegheDhakaTara / #TheCloudCappedStar (1960) :
One of the GREATEST woman-oriented films ever made in movie history in any corner of the world.
RATING - 8.5/10*
We often talk about immortal classics like #MotherIndia, #Bandini, #Sujatha, old Hollywood films, and some of those #SatyajitRay's classics based on women, but a large chunk of movie buffs is unaware of this Bengali gem, "Meghe Dhaka Tara." It's time everyone updated their list of the "greatest woman-driven films ever made" by adding The Cloud-Capped Star in it, just like I did it right this moment. Thanks to the foreign critics who added in the list of "1011 movies you must watch before you die." I'd say, make it 100. It's that GREAT! We have been habitual of seeing helpless women in the film and then flow tears on their tragic endings. Mother India (or Aurat) changed that perception for the masses. But have you ever thought of seeing a woman becoming the "man of the house."? We usually see mothers trying to get their daughters at the right age and get free from that big responsibility, but have you ever thought of a mother who doesn't want her daughter to get married because after her there will be no one to run the house? This film will show you these two unheard phenomena, and at the end it will tear you apart with a mic drop burn by saying that it's just a beginning for "another woman/girl" who has done nothing wrong and no harm to anyone in her life. "You haven't sinned," says her ex-boyfriend, and she replies, "I didn't stop when others were doing wrong; that's my sin. I shouldn't have been ordinary." Such a deep philosophy. The father says, "Swamp and shadow, both float." In the ending, that shopkeeper reminds us of her sandal's noise, which earlier seemed like just another normal thing. How powerful it becomes in the end, you can't imagine the impact. Jitters and tears both guaranteed! Ritwik Ghatak and Supriya Chaudhary will forever be remembered for this cloud-capped classic. Hats off!
