Marriott: A Masterclass in Corporate Contempt
When a 50th wedding anniversary turns into a corporate cover-up.
We planned a cross-Canada journey to celebrate fifty years of marriage — a trip of gratitude, beauty, and reflection. We stayed primarily at Fairmont hotels, where the experience matched the milestone: elegant, sincere, and human.
Until Montreal.
When I contacted Marriott, their agent claimed there wasn’t a Fairmont in Montreal. That was false — a deliberate misrepresentation, because there is a magnificent Fairmont there. Instead, we were diverted to the Renaissance Downtown Montreal, and that’s where our celebration turned into a four-night lesson in corporate decay.
Our room was directly beneath the top-floor lounge, where pounding music and laughter went on until after 3 a.m. every night. A connecting door to the adjoining room made it sound like the guests were inside ours. So much for privacy.
The food? Uninspired doesn’t begin to describe it. The dumplings tasted identical to the frozen ones from Costco — I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s exactly where they came from.
When we brought our concerns to the front desk, we were brushed off with polished disinterest. No apology, no initiative, no accountability. Back home, I escalated the matter to a senior Marriott manager. After multiple polite but fruitless exchanges, the pattern repeated — brushed off again.
Let me be clear: I wasn’t yelling or unreasonable. I was a CEO for decades. I know how business works, how human nature works, and how decent companies handle legitimate complaints. I wasn’t demanding special treatment, only a full refund for an experience that was a complete failure from top to bottom.
Then, after I posted about our stay on X (formerly Twitter), Marriott’s social media team reached out, promising to make things right. I wrote a two-page summary detailing every aspect of our stay. They thanked me — and disappeared. Not a word since.
That silence spoke volumes.
This wasn’t a single misstep. This was policy — the culture of a company that lies to make a sale, then hides behind scripted platitudes when caught. It’s a system built not on service, but on deflection and denial.
Well, not this time.
We’re taking this public. Not with rage, but with precision. We once dismantled a fraudulent investment advisory firm, and we’re using the same strategy to expose the rot here.
If you’re a traveler: cancel your Marriott bookings. Stay at the Fairmont, where you’re treated with grace, not contempt.
If you’re a shareholder: sell your stock before the fallout begins.
Because this isn’t an isolated case of bad management — it’s institutional arrogance wrapped in a loyalty program.

Year 10 really enjoyed their Master class with Chef Alex from the Marriott making fish goujons and homemade tartar sauce #chef #goodfood ##themarriott @SharplesSchool
We were very lucky to have 2 visitors from The Marriott Hotel offering a live food demonstration and careers talk. Year 10 were inspired by the skills and careers information, not to mention the sensational dish that the executive chef produced @SharplesSchool #chef #themarriott
