𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐕𝐄 *** The first wave of Karenia species bloom started in late March 2025 along the southern beaches of the Fleurieu Peninsula and was sucked into and around Gulf St. Vincent by the surface circulation. As I explained before, this surface circulation is induced by the autumn/winter density-driven outflow *** The cause of this first wave remains unknown. *** A strong bloom of the brevetoxin producer 𝐾𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑎 𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑎 develops in the cold winter months (suggesting this species grows faster than 𝘒𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘪𝘬𝘪𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘪 in cold water). *** As predicted by my modelling, the deadly algal bloom made its way into the Spencer Gulf where is caused regional but limited damage so far. *** The authorities vastly underestimated the longevity and severity of the deadly algal bloom. Did they learn from their mistakes? 𝟐. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃 𝐖𝐀𝐕𝐄 *** A new strong algal bloom has recently developed in the waters around Boston Bay in May 2026 after authorities had already declared the end of the algal bloom. *** The cause of this second blooming event is unknown. While river flooding and upwelling can be ruled out, bio-invasion from bilge water discharge or re-emergence from erosion of bottom resting cysts cannot be ruled out. *** The timing is similar to the first wave, suggesting that the return surface circulation will transport the algal clockwise around Spencer Gulf likely causing widespread devastation. *** 𝐾𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑎 𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑎 is expected to dominate the deadly algal bloom (again) in the colder autumn/winter water. *** Modelling suggests plume spreading into the Upper Spencer Gulf by October (with a return into the Gulf St. Vincent too). *** Despite this early warning, the authorities seem to be sleeping again.
