Taking time on holiday in the #Tunisian sun to read a book by @JohnNicholRAF that’s been on my reading pile for too long. Thank you John for writing such a well researched, thoughtful & emotionally charged study of this powerful topic. #Theunknownwarrior

The Unknown Warrior is an unidentified member of the British Imperial armed forces who died on the western front during the First World War. He is interred in a grave at Westminster Abbey, also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. @JohnNicholRAF #TheUnknownWarrior

What happened to the 3 sets of remains not selected is a mystery. Reports differ. Some say buried at St Pol, some that they were left by roadside to be discovered by later search teams, others that they were re-buried elsewhere. No definitive account exists.

This evening I was fortunate enough to witness what was without doubt one of the most thought provoking and moving reminders of the significance to our nation of the journey of our #TheUnknownWarrior.

A fantastic evening with @JohnNicholRAF at his #TheUnknownWarrior show at Worcester. Powerful, deeply moving & brilliantly produced👏 - and was great to have a quick chat afterwards at the book signing. All my friends in the @DorsetIc should get down to see him in Poole!

It was great to meet @JohnNicholRAF at the launch of his new book in Chesham, #TheUnknownWarrior.
If it's anything like his other books, it will be a great read.

#TheUnknownWarrior -
#Bangor officer’s pivotal role.
Roll of Honour #rollofhonour ✝️🙏
#OnThisDay in #1920 in strictest #secrecy, four #unidentified #British #bodies were #exhumed from temporary #battlefield #cemeteries at #Ypres, #Arras, the #Asine, and the #Somme.
None of the #soldiers who did the digging were told why. An amazing piece of footage was rediscovered from the #UTV archive. It was of #Major Ernest Fitzsimon sitting in the family garden in Bangor in 1966, casually discussing his pivotal role in one of the greatest mysteries of the #FirstWorldWar. He speaks about how he submitted a scheme for the operation, which was accepted and implemented under his supervision. He was filmed in 1966 as part of the commemorations of the #BattleOfTheSomme.
In today’s Roll for #1914 five #members of the #RoyalInniskillingFusiliers ☘️🇬🇧 from #NorthernIreland are remembered - Robert Averall from #Dungannon, Fred Davidson from #Belfast, John Newell from Stewartstown, Patrick O’Connor from #Londonderry and William Parker from #Enniskillen. There were almost 30 men from the #Regiment killed on this day. Most entries in the #CWGC roll do not include their home addresses. All are named on the #PloegsteertMemorial, #Belgium 🇧🇪. They died in the First #BattleOfYpres, the last major battle of the first year of World War I, which ends the Race to the Sea.
In 1944 three Northern Ireland ☘️🇬🇧 men were lost on the #LandingCraft LST- 420 which sank within sight of #Ostend when she hit a mine that immediately broke the ship in two parts. Robert Dinsmore of #Claudy, Samuel Foreman of Belfast, and John Rosborough of Londonderry were among the 14 officers and 224 other ranks who were lost. 31 were saved.
