That is a multi-year political and legal storm, not a paperwork exercise. Investment, hiring, and housing decisions do not wait politely. 3. Alberta is landlocked. 🛢️, gas, 🌾, potash, and manufactured goods need ports and rails that run through other jurisdictions. Independence does not create a tidewater corridor. It turns today’s pipeline and port fights into international border, tariff, and transit fights with B.C., Saskatchewan, and the 🇺🇲. 4. The 🇨🇦 market is Alberta’s home market. People, firms, professions, trucking, airlines, banking, and supply chains are built for one country. A new border means customs, regulatory divergence, labour-mobility friction, and years of rewriting contracts. Grievances with Ottawa are real; blowing up the internal market is an expensive way to express them. 5. Treaties and Indigenous rights are not optional extras. Numbered Treaties 6, 7, and 8, Métis rights, and section 35 of the Constitution sit underneath any secession talk. Courts have already forced consultation issues into this file. A province CANNOT simply take Treaty lands and peoples out of Canada by provincial ballot. Option 2 walks into that legal wall instead of around it. 6. The practical split would be brutal. Currency, Bank of Canada, federal debt share, CPP, EI, military assets, the RCMP contract, airspace, spectrum, passports, tax collection, and who owns what on day one all have to be negotiated. There is no off-the-shelf “Alberta dollar + keep the pension + keep the passport.” QC spent decades on this file and still finalized it. 7. Energy wealth does not automatically become a viable small state. Resource revenue is cyclical. An independent Alberta would still sell into 🇺🇲 and Asian markets, still need capital, and still face emissions and market-access politics, now as a small energy exporter with no federal bargaining weight and no guaranteed pipeline rights through neighbours. 8. AB already has tools inside Confederation. Provinces control resources, much of taxation, health, education, and large parts of economic regulation. AB has used sovereignty legislation, court challenges, interprovincial alliances, and political pressure. Those fights can be won or lost. Secession replaces a tough federal partner with harder neighbours and a weaker international voice. 9. The process itself would split the province. #YYC and #YEG, urban and rural, Indigenous and non-Indigenous, and even UCP voters are divided on this question. Polling already shows kitchen-table strain. A government “commencing the legal process” locks that fight in as the province’s main project while hospitals, schools, and the next downturn still need governing. 10. A remain vote is the clearer instruction. Option 1 says stay. Option 2 is sold as “just a process” and “just a say,” which is how a non-separatist majority can be used to legitimize a separatist roadmap. If the goal is a better deal in 🇨🇦, vote for governments and policies that negotiate that deal. If the goal is not independence, do not authorize the machinery built for independence. Grievances about equalization, the emissions cap, project approvals, and Ottawa’s habit of campaigning against Alberta are not imaginary. They are arguments for changing federal policy and provincial strategy. They are not, by themselves, a business plan for a new country.
