Here are 10 Ottoman-Turkish #Ramadan traditions every #Muslim should be familiar with:
☪️ As Ramadan drew near, a hafiz of the #Quran would begin reciting the holy text from memory 15 days prior to the sighting of the Crescent.
☪️ Capital of the Caliphate, the #TopkapiPalace in what is now known as Istanbul, hosted special public lectures throughout the holy month where scholars from every corner of the Empire & Islamic world recited the Quran, taught the Hadith, and answered religious and philosophical questions.
☪️ Iftar dinners were often followed by #Karagöz & #Hacivat puppets' shadow plays to entertain the children (as well as adults) and teach them valuable life lessons.
☪️ Residents of major towns were woken up for the #Suhoor meal by special drummers who walked and played their drums from street to street, every night, throughout the month of Ramadan -- a tradition that is kept alive in many parts of Türkiye to this day.
☪️ Laylat al-Qadr often witnessed the Sultan/Caliph lead the Taraweh prayer in person in one of Istanbul's iconic mosques, usually the #Ayasofya.
☪️ It was a well-respected Ramadan tradition among wealthy Ottoman citizens to visit food & spice shops, open the debt books, and anonymously pay off the debts of random strangers.
☪️ Limited to the Ramadan, Muslim Ottoman citizens were peacefully guided to mosques to take part in prayers as a group, form jamaahs, uphold Islamic practices.
☪️ Ever heard of receiving ‘tooth rent’ for eating food? Turks did in Ramadan. It meant hosting Iftar dinners in mansions and palaces and handing out expensive gifts: silver plates, amber rosaries, precious stones, silver rings, and gold coins wrapped in velvet bags. To justify the fancy gifts and make sure people didn't feel overwhelmed and refused to take the gifts, the host would make it sound like they 'earned it' by saying something like: “You have been my guest, you have tired your teeth by eating the food." Hence the term: Tooth rent.
☪️ In Ramadan, Ottomans always lit up the minarets of their mosques with bright lights visible from far distances, and displayed colorful messages and verses from the Quran & Hadith.
☪️ Ottoman merchants were strictly forbidden from raising the prices of goods & services during Ramadan, with serious criminal penalties for violators. Certain hours of the day, shop-owners were forbidden from closing their shops as to make sure all household needs were met during the holy month.
