Does not top the first film of the trilogy, but it is quite fun, especially as a murder mystery.
#Topper (1937) wasn't McLeod's best, but it was a pretty decent entertainer. The sequel felt underwhelming, and then came Topper Returns! This third and final film in the franchise is better than the second but does not top the first film of the trilogy. Yes, we have some genuine fun because of the mix of multiple genres, such as comedy, horror, murder mystery, and suspense thriller. This is more like The Cat and the Canary, with an invisible ghost trying to find the killer. To summarize the interesting storyline in one sentence, it's about a girl who is murdered, and after her death, she tries to find the killer. Isn't that fascinating? Yes, it is. The idea is developed very well within the theme of Topper. It's just that the fun elements are limited. They don't go hysterical or over the top, but I wish they had. It also features the subplot of a wealthy heiress, who is supposed to be murdered for her wealth. Instead, her girlfriend is killed in the night , and that girl becomes a ghost and seeks the help of Mr. Topper to find the killer. Joan Blondell is the beautiful ghost, and she is certainly charming. This is one of her most appealing roles, and you'd love it for sure. Roland Young has done a fantastic job as Mr. Topper, whereas Billie Burke, as Mrs. Topper, was somewhat fun whenever she went into chatterbox mode. Dennis O'Keefe is literally wasted, but what a fantastic surprise the chauffeur, aka Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, has provided here! I truly loved him; totally, absolutely, and wholeheartedly. Roy Del Ruth has definitely done better than McLeod concerning the predecessor, but it falls short of McLeod's opening film in the trilogy. Overall, it's good fun for Topper lovers and others as well.
