Today marks one year since Trey’s Law took effect in Texas! 365 days since sexual assault survivors in Texas were released from NDAs and legally free to share their stories when and if they choose to do so. #TruthSetFree
Over the past year, survivors who sought justice throughout the state's civil courts have had their voices legally restored, a freedom that should have never been for sale in the first place.
Trey’s Law prohibits the misuse of NDAs in civil settlement agreements related to child sexual abuse and child sex trafficking. The Texas version of Trey’s Law renders NDAs void and unenforceable in all sexual abuse cases - regardless of the victim’s age, and regardless of when the abuse occurred.
It also protects victims by allowing information they want protected to remain confidential. This law went into effect on September 1, 2025 and also applies retroactively to agreements before that date.
The jurisdiction of and language in each civil settlement agreement is unique. We recommend that individuals under an NDA for child sexual abuse and/or trafficking claims seek legal counsel if they are unsure whether Trey's Law may apply to them.
Texas and six other states have now enacted versions of Trey's Law. The momentum is building nationally! A federal version was introduced in Congress this year and received unanimous approval in the U.S. Senate in May 2026. The federal bill now awaits House action.

Last week, #TreysLaw advocate Caryn Jenkins bravely shared testimony in a Louisiana Senate Judiciary Committee hearing of Senate Bill 185 and disclosed her ex-husband’s sexual abuse of two children. Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee reconvened for a second hearing of Trey’s Law, where the bill was reported favorably with a UNANIMOUS committee vote. The bill will now move to the Senate Floor for a vote.
This testimony serves as a powerful reminder that the amount of people affected by childhood sexual abuse is vast - no matter if they are abuse survivors or witnesses to abuse like Caryn.

Today, Alabama Governor @GovernorKayIvey held a ceremonial signing of #TreysLaw (SB30), which voids NDAs in civil cases involving sexual abuse, assault, and trafficking. Effective October 1, 2026, victims’ voices will be protected by Alabama’s civil courts.
We are ever grateful to Sen. Matt Woods and Rep. David Faulkner for championing this public safety legislation—and also thankful for the unanimous votes by Alabama policymakers who prioritized protecting victims’ voices this session.
Alabama is now the fifth state to pass a version of Trey’s Law with nine jurisdictions considering similar bills, including U.S. Congress.
