The strengthening of the monsoon #westerlies has resulted in widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across the #Ulhas #River basin, with the hill stations of Matheran and Khandala receiving an impressive 300–400 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours.
The heavy rainfall over the Ulhas basin has led to a rapid response in the Ulhas River, with the water level rising to 15.0 metres at 12:00 PM on 5 July 2026 at Badlapur.

Fortunately, the water level has since receded to 17.22 meters by 9 a.m.
Current Situation and Outlook
While some low-lying areas may experience water accumulation, the receding water level indicates the situation is currently under control and major flooding is not expected. This highlights the crucial role of the Sahyadri Ghats in the Ulhas basin's hydrology and the rapid response of the river to heavy precipitation.

Heavy #rainfall exceeding 200 mm (a "double century") has been recorded in the #SahyadriGhat section of the #Ulhas basin over the past 14 hours. Consequently, the water level of the Ulhas #River at #Badlapur has risen to 16.22 meters as of 10 p.m. tonight, nearing the warning level of 16.5 meters.
The rise in the #UlhasRiver's water level was exacerbated by combination of #Rain & the high tide, which peaked around 9:30 p.m. Now that the tide is receding, with the next low tide expected between 3 and 4 a.m., the river's water level is not anticipated to increase. Even with a slight increase in water level, the situation is not yet a cause for concern. The Ulhas River's water level is still approximately one meter below the danger mark of 17.5 meters, providing a safe buffer.
