We successfully performed Stage 1 (advanced evaluation/test phase) of #SacralNeuromodulation (#SNM) in a patient with #UnderactiveBladder who requires #CleanIntermittentCatheterization (#CIC) six times daily.
The procedure was completed in approximately 20 minutes as a #MinimallyInvasive #Urology intervention. The entry point was identified as the S3 foramen, located about 10 cm cranial to the tip of the coccyx. Access to the S3 foramen was achieved at a 66° angle, and optimal motor responses were obtained by testing with two different needles along the same trajectory. Although the sacral anatomy allowed access toward the S2 foramen, this pathway was avoided based on reflex response evaluation.
In this case, appropriate responses were obtained from all electrodes at stimulation levels below 1 mA, supporting accurate lead placement. Care was also taken to avoid creating a false passage during introducer sheath placement, ensuring a controlled and precise technique in the field of #NeuroUrology.
These promising findings from the SNM test phase may indicate a potential reduction in the patient’s need for catheterization, contributing to ongoing advances in #MedicalInnovation and #Surgery.
