@JosephineCumbo Thank you so much for your reporting over the years on the #USSMess @JosephineCumbo ❤️
Want to see the results that sustained #CollectiveAction can achieve? Academics and ARPS staff: Check your payslip - net pay is up as a result of the resolution of the #USSmess Pension Dispute. It literally pays to #JoinAUnion @TUCBham @ucu @BhamUniUnison @illdoitanyway

@JosephineCumbo 35% *average* cut - younger people faced 50% cuts
University leaders were indifferent as their staff lost a fortune.
Now pretending no one could have known the cuts were unnecessary!
Comprehensive managerial failure

Top thread from current @UCU #USS negotiator Joss on understanding the significance of yesterday's joint statement with @UniversitiesUK over the intended 2023 valuation outcome. Spells out what the changes mean and how much has been gained. Read! #USSmess
Anyone who has a USS pension and did not join @ucu #ucuRISING strikes over #USSMess should have a think about @cupofassam's suggestion.
May I politely suggest to non-UCU members who benefit from the pending USS changes, to the tune of tens of £000s (and to those members who for whatever reason did not strike), please consider supporting those who took action and lost salary for your gain: https://t.co/anSy19eKJE
When we stick together we *can* win.
Massive heartfelt thanks must particularly go to every single precariously employed member - especially those not actually in #USS! - who embodied solidarity and leadership in taking industrial action to fix the #USSmess

Following today's announcement on USS pensions (https://t.co/LfnDibk7gv) the Door of Discontent has something to be less discontented about. USS pension but not a @ucu member? WE went on strike and won this for YOU.
(@ucuedinburgh #ucuRISING #USSmess @USSbriefs )

We were forced to take repeated strike action to secure this.
In a reasonable world Vice-Chancellors would apologise and pay us back.

UK universities have expressed “near unanimous” support for reversing cuts to the sector’s biggest pension scheme and have urged fund managers to “fast-track” lowering contributions and restoring benefits. #USS

Another step closer to reversing out six years of awful scheme management and opportunistic attacks by employers, with benefits set to go back to where they were before the 2018 strikes. I can't help but look at the "near" unanimous support and wonder who objected... #USSmess

Bill Galvin's pay was £790k this last year (including a bonus of £262k) - up from £637k last year (with its bonus of £108k) #USSMess
More than 200 staff at #USS, the UK's largest pension plan, earn more than £100,000 per annum, according to the scheme's annual report, published today.
The scheme's chief executive, Bill Galvin, was awarded a £262,000 bonus.

What would an investigation into @USSpensions 2013-2023 reveal? I have thoughts, but I'm not sure I'm willing to write them down here! I think we may need one for closure on this debacle. #USSmess
@JosephineCumbo Serious and searching questions must be raised about the management of the USS pension scheme in light of its record since 2020 (if not before that too). It should be the subject of an independent investigation to determine how they got all this so disastrously wrong.
It's been a long, long fight #USSMess
Adam Tickell, V-C of Sussex, and only V-C on the UUK negotiating committee, quoted on 14 February:
‘I don’t think the strikes will work.’
&
'I would be amazed if more strikes would be announced after the set dates.'
Surprised Tickell, I guess?

The levels of fury that have built up over many years because of USS’s and employers’ attacks on USS pensions cannot be overestimated.
We will not forget what led to that fury, nor which protagonists were most ardent in their desires to smash our pensions into pieces #USSMess
Useful thoughts (as ever!) from two ace UCU negotiators 👇👇

Might we retire the hashtag #USSMess someday soon? 🤔
USS pension update klaxon. 📢The Technical Provisions consultation data, released today, indicates that the cost of restored pensions from April 2024 will be down to 20.6% of salaries. Read on for details. (Mark and Jackie thread) 🧵
🎉 Seriously good news 🎉
(Still unbelievable it took strike action to achieve reversal of these outrageous cuts. Uni finance directors whose budgets will benefit: feel free to send strikers a thank-you card!)
