What does it all mean? Does terminology matter?
It does, considering crypto is an innovative technology, and innovation starts with education.
Let me preface this by saying I am an artist. The blockchain is a delivery medium that guides how I execute my output. I do not define myself in one bucket or the other (onchain vs. on-chain), yet I'm an advocate for the blockchain.

My timeline is full of conversations, throwing out terms backed by strong opinions—onchain vs. on-chain, and blah blah blah. It feels like the divide of politics. Instead of unifying around "ART," the movement is stuck in a divide for control over the "BAG."

Onchain:
Refers to artwork whose metadata, such as ownership or transactions, is recorded on the blockchain, but the actual visual files are often stored off-chain using external storage solutions like IPFS. (The longevity of the art is subject to the IPFS provider)
On-chain:
Refers to artwork that exists entirely within the blockchain, with all data—including the visual files—stored and executed directly on the blockchain without external reliance.

Without education, a digital artist would utilize Opensea, Mint artwork, and think it is the same. Below are some considerations for those interested in utilizing the blockchain and its potential...
Onchain (Off-chain Storage):
There are very few limitations to what can be done here. Often, limitations are defined by the marketplace. An artist can create in raster, vector, video, or sound.

On-chain (On-chain Storage):
This approach requires significant considerations. Minting directly to a chain, the artwork is subject to file size limitations, gas cost expenses, and technical knowledge. An artist would consider working in code with this method to ensure lightweight file sizes.

On the surface, the above seems pretty straightforward. Then we dive a level deeper, where artists such as @thecryptobushi @MonkMatto @ChainLeftist @YigitDuman and many more are creating artwork based on smart contract generative computations. This is the alpha, and the medium is the contract, where I will begin to play in my future art.

Crypto art is still in its early years, but on-chain art projects have been around for years. My first interaction with on-chain artwork was the Chain Runners in 2020. Their mint and artwork were 100% on-chain, and I was mind-blown when I read about the mechanics.
