The magpie goose is a 'living fossil' that can be found in Australasia. A waterbird that feeds on land and in the water, it has only partially webbed feet. It appears in centuries-old Aboriginal rock art, where its feathers are also shown in handheld fans. #virtualaviary
The vocalizations of the corncrake are often described as 'krek krek', hence the bird's common name and also its Latin name Crex crex. Males deliver the call while pointing their bills towards the sky, and may utter as many as 20,000 croaks in a single night. #virtualaviary

When I decided to add the black swan to the #virtualaviary, I had no idea that there was a stable population of them living just down the road in Dawlish, where they are the town's symbol. Even more surprising is that ~25% of all black swan pairs are homosexual. Fascinating!
There are a whopping 42 subspecies of the horned lark, which is known as the 'shore lark' in Europe. As you can tell from the eponymous protrusions on the lark's head, this bird is closely associated with the devil, and, therefore, overwinters in Hell. #virtualaviary
