The extraordinary excursion since 1859 of the magnetic north pole towards the geographic north, may have determined much of the climate change experienced since then, because it may have caused changes in ocean currents and/or increased activity in ocean ridges. On 1 September 1859, the Earth experienced the largest solar storm ever recorded, known as the Carrington Event. Coincidence or not, that same year the Magnetic North Pole changed the direction of its declination by almost 180 degrees and began its rapid excursion towards the geographic North Pole. Since 1990, it has done so at a very rapid pace. It was precisely around 1860 that we left the Little Ice Age behind, and from 1980-1990, the average global temperature recorded by satellites began to rise. It is likely that this excursion of the magnetic north pole is playing a decisive role in the process, as it could be influencing ocean currents and/or the activity of ocean ridges. Significant pole excursions occur approximately every 6,000 years. The previous one was almost exactly 6,000 years ago (Tianchi-Noah), and the one before that was 12,000 years ago (Gothenburg). These excursions have been identified as far back as 72,000 years ago, always occurring approximately every 6,000 years. The Earth's magnetic field can decrease significantly during these excursions. It is estimated that the magnetic field has decreased by 15% since 1859. Some scientists believe that pronounced excursions may be a prelude to a reversal of the north and south magnetic poles. The magnetic poles reverse on average every 200,000 to 300,000 years, although this is only an average, as the period varies widely. The current geomagnetic situation (Brunhes-Matuyama period) has now lasted 780,000 years. In no geomagnetic period in the last 10 million years has the magnetic north pole remained in the northern hemisphere for so long. It is therefore possible that there will be a reversal of the poles soon, which will be a major cataclysm. But ‘soon’ in geological terms could be in 1,000, 5,000 or 10,000 years... Nothing to worry about.
