Dear Mr Carroll,
Re: Abortion is not ‘care’, either for the baby or for the mother
On behalf of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, of which I am currently Moderator, I write today with profound dismay following this morning’s announcement concerning your government’s policy to fund abortions through the public purse, and to promote this as an advance in “women’s health”.
Members of our church, of course, believe that women should receive every proper provision for their health and well-being. And women who become pregnant deserve thoughtful, compassionate and practical support. That should be a given in any decent and caring society.
But what about the life of the unborn child?
There are two lives to consider: the well-being and health of the mother, and the developing life of the child within her womb. Why should the one be recognised and protected, while the other is disregarded, and disposed of in the medical waste bin?
We are speaking, after all, of a developing human life which, if pregnancy continues to birth, will ordinarily enter this world as a little girl or boy — with a life to live, birthdays to celebrate, and a future to unfold.
Surely that life deserves consideration, too?
I understand that governing Victoria is complex. There are countless competing demands upon a government, and I would never judge the record of a premier and his (or her) party by a single issue alone.
But the protection of women and the protection of unborn children are both profoundly precious to me. This conviction is the view of my church, the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, and of countless other Christians, Catholic and Protestant alike.
We believe that the deliberate taking of unborn human life is a grave moral wrong. And to have that practice further encouraged and funded by the State is deeply distressing.
I find it extraordinarily difficult to support a government that takes this position.
Who will speak for the unborn child, who has no voice, no vote, and no means of defence?
I would genuinely welcome your response.

CCTV footage and shocking family testimony have completely dismantled a Liberal-backed hit job targeting One Nation Victorian leader Warren Pickering.
Former Queensland LNP adviser Jessica Christmas, who has had Scott staying at her home in Victoria according to reports, was caught on camera acting as the driver for Pickering's disgruntled ex-partner Jo Scott, who turned up on her estranged son's doorstep with $400 in cash and a bag of nappies.
Her goal, according to her son? Pressure her own child to lie to a journalist and claim he witnessed Pickering using hard drugs as a boy.
When her son bravely refused to lie, declaring "I'm not saying yes because it's not true," the entire Liberal smear collapsed.
Pickering, an Army veteran, says the approach to his stepson shows how low his opponents will stoop to tear down a man who served his country.

#Labor continues to hammer #WarrenPickering over drug use in his 20s, turning his admitted history with speed, ecstasy and marijuana into election ammunition as #OneNation gains ground in Victoria. Pickering says he stopped before joining the ADF at 28 and disclosed it when he enlisted. More serious methamphetamine allegations from a former partner are denied.
Labor’s standard gets very selective around #TanyaPlibersek. Her #husband, #MichaelCouttsTrotter, was a #heroin addict and #dealer and spent almost three years in prison over a drug-importation offence. Plibersek has publicly celebrated his rehabilitation as a “great Australian success story”, while Labor figures have praised his integrity and attacked attempts to weaponise his past.
Yet when Pickering’s decades-old drug use becomes politically useful, Labor suddenly treats old drug history as a weapon. The same movement that demands rehabilitation be respected when it touches one of its most senior ministers is now trying to make another man’s past politically toxic.
#Labor cannot preach redemption around Tanya Plibersek’s household, then abandon the principle the moment Warren Pickering becomes electorally inconvenient. That is not consistency. It is political convenience dressed up as morality.

Wow, that was some press conference. #WarrenPickering answered all the questins fr. journalists, some ridiculous ones i.e. what about the lingere ? But the daughter and the son standing up for him, and the son's utter condemnation of the mother made for hard viewing. I really hope he stays and fights for #OneNation in #Victoria.
