Had a great and stimulating time at the #WFAstroCan meeting, supported by the @Perimeter and the @DunlapInstitute. Thank you to all those who gave me so much food for thought about the future of Wide Field Astronomy in Canada!
Have to say #WFAstroCan was a really valuable meeting, lots of opportunities and challenges outlined ahead of LRP2020 - thanks so much to all organizers - plus @reneehlozek @LaCaParker @SciBry + others for tweeting up a storm! And of course @Perimeter for hosting!
Graham on @LSST data management:
1) (Annual) Data release pipeline
2) Prompt data pipeline (different image analysis)
3) User generated data (stacking, shear, catalogs) #WFAstroCan
Pat Hall reminds us of https://t.co/nRBB549x5T - essential to bring into perspective when one is talking about new (or current) astronomy telescope projects #WFAstroCan
Personal anecdote from @dstndstn: take SDSS spectra, predict Gaia photometry, find outliers (can we find galaxies that look bluer?? changing-look quasars?) [Instead, found when SDSS spectrograph was broken; red dots next to blue dots…] #WFAstroCan
One of the resounding messages that has come through this meeting is that we as a community need to advocate more strongly for our needs to MPs, government etc. rather than only complaining about lack of funding #WFAstroCan
Awesome talk by @scgQuasar at #WFAstroCan
It is great to be reminded that #Canada has a great heritage in #space @DontLetGoCanada #morespace
I’m super excited for #Canadian participation in @LSST and feel we can have leadership roles in the science working groups and roles. How do we leverage our individual research groups to collaborate more with each other and outside groups? #WFAstroCan
And now Alan McConnarchie is telling us about #CFIS on @CFHTelescope - access for #Canadians to the data! #WFAstroCan
Awesome summary of @GeminiObs follow up resources with a look to @LSST by John Blakeslee #WFAstroCan - important as we plan the complementarity of probes on the wide field.
A shoutout to the meeting on the Future of Space Astronomy in Canada https://t.co/wb8FMFrKMx #WFAstroCan
Another talk about #CHIMEexperiment by Shriharsh Tendulkar on #FRBs and the search for them with CHIME. Papers to come soon, for now enjoy https://t.co/jfEg3nB75j #WFAstroCan
Did you know that #CHIMEexperiment has build the worlds largest correlator? [edit: I’m proud that @dunlap_institute folks including Prof. Vanderlinde, Cherry Ng and others are working so hard on this technical side] #WFAstroCan
Diving into "Radio and Submm Facilities" at #WFAstroCan with Bryan Gaensler, Douglas Scott, Kendrick Smith, Shriharsh Tendulkar, Michael Fich.
Comment from @dstndstn: given that large projects need lots of infrastructure that don’t necessarily lead to publications, we need to look at hiring practice (eg. project scientists) to ensure ethical treatment of junior people. #WFAstroCan
