I'm writing a book!! A graduate textbook on the Dynamics and Astrophysics of Galaxies with @PrincetonUPress. But it will be different from what you're used to: the print copy will be accompanied by an HTML version with interactive examples and live code in the browser, 100% free.
Announcing ChatGaia! Chat with the Gaia Archive - no code required. ChatGaia could greatly help astronomy students get started with astronomy data by turning hours of work into seconds.
Looking to use #ArtificialIntelligence in #astronomy even if you don't have prior experience in this? This might be the right postdoc for you! Please reach out if interested.
#UofT โs Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdocs program boosts the work of early-career scholars in #engineering, #mathematics and #naturalscience by giving them vital tools in #AI.

Really stoked about this paper with Henry Leung! We develop a versatile neural-network model for ๐stars๐ that can tackle many tasks with flexible inputs:

A small step towards an astro-'foundation model': a single model for all of data-driven astronomy!
๐ซ New 1.9.0 version of galpy! ๐ซ
Highlights:
- Orbit.SOS and Orbit.plotSOS: Quickly compute surfaces of section using exact and brute-force methods
- Forward and reverse action-angle transforms in 1D
- Orbit.animate3d: Animate orbits in 3D

Why did I feel the need to thank an AI chat bot for helping me with an Excel formula?!?? I mean, it did help me do something that would have otherwise taken me a long time to figure out, but still...

@MilesCranmer@github Yeah, ChatGPT is impressive, but what I like about Copilot is that it's already changing how I work (like in the real example below), while all ChatGPT use that I've seen is pretty gimmicky. Although I'm sure it will become practically useful soon as well

@KnudJahnke @African_Dave1@github Whatever it is, it works and its suggestions are extremely useful and good. Clearly also learns from you as you code/write and suggests create new things, like in this video where I'm using it to help write documentation and it correctly adds a new image with a relevant filename
@MilesCranmer@github I was mostly jokingly showing off how impressive Copilot is (and then got locked out of my account somehow). It's quite easy to ask astro coding questions that it can't answer and really I think it's great if students use it to help with coding and can focus more on physics
@cmbennett01 @KnudJahnke @African_Dave1@github I think it is creatively changing the code in the docs/other people's repos and often getting the changes right, but it can also do funny things that aren't valid code (much of the code in this video is not valid and copilot clearly likes MWPotential2014 ๐๐)
