Very thoughtful article 'Selfies from Auschwitz' by @maria_zalewski on how @AuschwitzMuseum engages with Holocaust-related visual content on @Instagram: https://t.co/QKAycGTZ2a

Last week @wienerlibrary facilitated a debate on the use of #SocialMedia and #Holocaust discourse. We enjoyed the discussions and different perspectives immensely! You can find a summary of the #debate here: https://t.co/SOURiYQTxz #WLdebate #HMD2018
Last week I joined the #wldebate on social media and Holocaust discourse. Some of my tweets are featured in a #Storify by @wienerlibrary: https://t.co/eq9RGifAcg

@wienerlibrary Thanks so much for hosting this interesting debate & for your important work! #WLdebate
@wienerlibrary Agreed. My initial reaction was outrage but if that's the way young people perceive the world & are learning and being respectful, it shouldn't be such a problem. Plus it might create distance for them to process traumatic experiences #WLDebate
And that’s a wrap! A huge thanks to everyone who has contributed to our debate tonight both online & in person. Please do continue to share your thoughts using #WLdebate over the coming days
A10 We've been talking about how the meaning of Holocaust memorials is up to interpretation. We can't tell people how they should react #WLdebate
A10 For some young people social media is so ubiquitous to everyday life that it seems inconceivable not to post to Instagram while at a camp. We have to understand that attitudes change and that isn't necessarily seen by peers as a disrespectful action #WLdebate
A10 We're talking about how @instagram can act as a form of commemoration & memorialisation which makes it possible for the past and the present to be presented at the same time. It’s a digital lieu de memoire #WLdebate
Q10: As @instagram starts to become one of the most popular platforms of social media, are we caring more about images and aesthetics rather than content? Does this enhance or diminish the memory of the Holocaust and Holocaust commemoration? #WLdebate
I learned in recent yrs that my father who somehow barely survived Auschwitz&other camps (though lost his entire family) gave of his food2 a starving man in the camp who was thus able2survive, my mom met his widow- humanity can&must B preserved @ElphabaLondon #WLdebate https://t.co/WV6kuOB4gI
@hedy_wald @wienerlibrary I will care always and try always, I have felt it's my duty since I was a child. It's for personal reasons too. A Jewish man saved my grandfather's life in Auschwitz, I don't know his name and sadly I never will. #WLdebate
@aisfor_astrid @wienerlibrary No sure whether this is your experience also, but, unbelievably, I found that the only thing that tend to work fairly regularly is reporting anything as 'spam'. 'Spam' seems to be taken far more seriously than hate speech, especially, as you say, in high numbers. #WLdebate
Q9: Why do people express antisemitic/racist views online? Does the anonymity mean it’s easier to express than in real life? #WLdebate
@hedy_wald @wienerlibrary In Auschwitz, my grandfather's life was spared because he wasn't Jewish, the man who saved him was shot in the head in front of him, because he was Jewish. I was told this story by my grandfather when I was eight, he wanted for me to know and remember. #WLdebate

@wienerlibrary Across Europe, ‘real life‘ Holocaust memorials, too, reflect national identity & may also represent formal acknowledgement in accordance with expectations of the European community. Social media is one such manifestation, not distinctly separate of it. #WLdebate
