04/09/1987 Roop Kanwar (17yr) was burnt alive (SATI) on the funeral pyre of her husband Maal Singh Shekhawat at Deorala vill of Sikar district in Rajasthan. It was only 8 months they were married.
This caused a nationwide protest following Rajiv Gandhi Govt elevated the practice of Sati Pratha to the status of murder & reintroduced the penalty for abettors.
BJP opposed this 'Anti-sati Law'.
Roop’s in-laws were arrested for murder. Thousands of Rajputs wielding swords congregated at Ram Lila Maidan in Jaipur, demanding their release. Processions were led by then BJP legislator and State Party vice-president Rajendra Singh Rathore.
In those protests and processions the murdered Roop Kanwar was glorified as well as the 'Practice of Sati'. Followed this arrest of around 200 people for glorifying the sati system.
The then Leader of the opposition was Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (BJP). Though he publicly deplored the practice of SATI, his nephew, former Yuva Morcha president Pratap Singh Khachriya, was one of the leaders of the processions held in support of SATI. Consequently arrested.
Bhairon Singh Shekhawat privately asked VP Jagdeep Dhankhar to represent the accused. Dhankhar complied and within four or five months, all the accused who glorified sati got bail. This made him earn many friends among the influential Rajputs at that time.
As I said earlier, our VP Dhankar is a prominent lawyer.
But I have a fear that those Hindutva social media Chintu Mintu will start issuing SUPARI in his name to #LawrenceBishnoi if they come to know that in 1998, he represented Salman Khan and other actors accused of poaching blackbucks in Rajasthan. He was instrumental in securing the first bail for the accused.
Nevermind, he also had represented the fugitive Lalit Modi in case of misappropriation of funds in 2000.
However, as being aged, Dhankar possibly has some memory loss. As in the last Parliament session, he argued about his reverence for RSS, but it was untrue as his notion of respect towards RSS has been grown in recent times during Modi Rule.
On January 5, 1995, as MLA from the Congress party he praised the new “political sentiment” in India today, which rejected the RSS “extremism” after the demolition of the Babri Masjid. 😊

Last to mention, our PM Modi often refers to him as Kissan Putra (son of a Farmer). Like his other claims this also falls flat as Dhankar's father Gokal Chand, wasn’t a farmer by profession. He was a railway contractor.
Gokal Chand’s elder brother Haribaksh Singh was conferred the title of “Chaudhary” by the Dundlod thikana – an administrative unit in pre-independence India – under Jaipur king Swai Man Singh II.
“Chaudharys” were local revenue collectors as a representative of the king and not Kissan (Farmer).
Hence, if in future any fool or Gobar claims about our VP Dhankar beinf a Farmer, please correct her/him.
