I opened the door with great trepidation....
At the far end of the shelf was she who was yet to be identified....in Bev's place! At the opposite end right next to the door was Bev.
I entered and within a matter of seconds I knew it was hormonal banshee
#WriteSomethingEveryDay
Following morning all quiet in the garden. Unidentified yet potential hormonal banshee was nowhere to be seen so I let Bev out of her shed and gave her breakfast adding a few grapes (one of her favourites). All was OK then dusk arrived who was in the shed?
#WriteSomethingEveryDay
With Bev safe in the new henhouse, Dot and Joan spent the night in the goose hut. We had no idea what had happened the but we didn't want to take any chances. Dot and Joan were both good layers but one had become an hormonic banshee but which one?

On a sunny day June 2019 and after a period of not laying, Bev produced one of her blue eggs. At this point all 3 hens then were laying.
I was suddenly aware of an angry confrontation going on between either Dot or Joan with Bev and Bev was being pecked.

Bev, Joan and Dot were now in full occupation of the goose hut In 2019 the hen hut was collapsing, we decided to move the girls into a more compact mews type of accomodation and use the goose hut to store logs. Girls moved in & logs were stored in next hut
#WriteSomethingEveryDay Bev, Dot and Joan continued to lay eggs throughout 2017 to 2018 all in good health - I put that down to a varied diet, regular dustbaths to eradicate any mites and plenty of water as they had access to our garden pond. @under_blue_sky @dreamergirl2110

I LOVE eggs, indeed one of the main reasons we keep chickens is to enjoy the wonderful eggs they produce. Most days we have eggs for breakfast, poached (3 minutes no faffing) boiled (4 minutes) From from time to time we have gluts - where I experiment.
The gals settled down to a daily routine which saw them produce an egg each. They had their 3 containers and would take themselves away to the privacy of the henhouse at various times of the day. We always identified the eggs by the variation in colour. #WriteSomethingEveryDay
#WriteSomethingEveryDay Easter approached & Barry entered puberty with testeserone oozing from every pore! He attacked me, neighbours and even tried to take Jon's eyes out! Barry did not have a good friday! @Jharrison22 @biancarobinson @juliedonaldson @prestonmissc @chriskh1

In 2017 our chickens went into lockdown. They were to stay secure for quite a few weeks. On one occasion Barry escaped and had to be ushered back in! This it would seem was a turning point in his behavoural pattern! @under_blue_sky @dreamergirl2110

We left Bev to it, she
was using her own instinct to look after her brood soon she had them sleeping on her shelf.
The weather was really warm, their first outing
Bev loves to lie in the sun they had a spell on the patio - protecting the chicks all along.

Bev was a broody hen, a clucker 2016 we brought her some fertile eggs. Whilst she was laying her eggs were not fertile after the passing of Ernest
Early morning would often see her have a quick walk round the paddock and have a dust bath.
21 days till hatch time. @under_blue_sky

And then there were 3.
The bond between Bev, Mabel and Olwyn continued after Bev's hospitalisation. They would regularly make their way to the kitchen door and peer into the house checking out what the human shed was all about
#WriteSomethingEveryDay One day I discovered black feathers in the garden Bev had been attacked. We rushed her to the vet and the immense wound was stapled. 2 weeks in our porch with medication every day saw her champion her way back to health. Hence the title Bev the Miracle Hen

Margie had an off day, neighbour was looking after the hens and on one particular day Margie hadn't wanted to leave the henhouse.
Next morning she was dead, having passed away in her sleep. She was buried under the cherry blossom tree
A fitting gesture for a happy little soul.
