In this political war of attrition, sitting in an echo chamber, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that generally the American people are NOT politically engaged like us. Let me share with you a message from the legendary Matthew Cooke that is the anthem for our time. It leaves no stone unturned on the Republican march to authoritarian rule. Politics only becomes important when it intersects with their often busy and challenging existence. Families can only appreciate policy when it touches their lives. For most Americans, they are rightly only interested in kitchen table economic political derivatives. As activists, we need to act as policy translators and guardians against the exploitation of the vulnerable. We need to advocate for those that can’t advocate on their own behalf. Far too often, we assume that people understand politics or even care for that matter. If you’re a single mom working 3 jobs to feed your kids, chances are, you f*cking hate politicians, because no matter how hard you try, how many hours work and what promises they make, your life is just eat sleep and work. You are their doormat. If you’re middle class parents who both hold down jobs, you feel that you are a government slush fund for them to tap in every crisis. But unlike our single mom, you likely get at least some family time and might even manage a vacation each year. If you’re in the top 5% your only concern is to hold onto the wealth you have and not fall victim to the troubles of the middle class. After all, you don’t want to be a government piggy bank too. If you’re in the top 1% then f*ck everybody, it’s your belief that you pay more than enough tax and to protect your position, you can buy politicians and lawmakers to protect your wealth. Welcome to the Republican dream. The problem with the attitude of the top 1% is that throughout history it has only led to one thing. Revolution. Greed has become so pervasive that it has lost sight of the one thing that would really insulate them from revolution. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. Reagan called it trickledown economics. Sadly it becomes parched economics when you hand control of the tap to the ones from who wealth is supposed to be trickling down. #DemsAct #DemVoice1 #wtpBLUE #ONEV1 #FAM46
