Researchers have developed a #fast #highresolution #microscope that enables them to #visualize #neuronalactivity within the #zebrafish #brain.
Zebrafish #Danio #rerio (#Danionidae) are popular aquarium fish that are easy to keep and breed. For these same reasons, they also serve as suitable #scientificmodel organisms. A particular advantage for science is that the developing #embryos and #larvae are initially #transparent, allowing for the observation of various developmental biological processes. The development of the #nervoussystem, including the brain, is of particular interest. However, current research focuses not only on the brain's ontogenetic development but also on its detailed anatomy and functional mechanisms.
Neurons communicate with one another via #electricalimpulses. Since vertebrate brains are generally highly capable of multitasking, constantly processing multiple sensory inputs simultaneously, electrical impulses occur in different regions of the brain at the same time. Visualizing this activity has previously required complex measurement methods.
Z. Wang et al. (2026) have developed a #novelmicroscope capable of optically capturing and displaying brain-wide neuronal activity within the zebrafish brain. This opens up entirely new research possibilities for a wide range of neurobiological questions.
To achieve this, researchers from the MIT team modified a #lightsheetmicroscope. By using a #laserbeam and sequentially imaging #multiplelayers, they generate #threedimensional #images of a large #volume. Since neural networks operate extremely rapidly, often taking only a few milliseconds, previous methods such as #calciumimaging were too slow. To create a high-speed microscope, the authors increased the camera's image #acquisitionrate. They also employed "#remoterefocusing" to boost the microscope's #scanningspeed. This enabled the researchers to scan the zebrafish brain 200 times per second. They introduced a #voltageindicator named #Positron2-Kv into the fish larvae by genetically modifying specific neurons; this provided sufficient resolution to visualize brain voltage patterns at high speed. Additionally, ultraviolet light was used as an extra stimulus. The researchers aim to further develop their technology to eventually correlate brain activity with states of #consciousness and #behaviors.
