As a #cineaste and nature filmmaker, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce a #historic #cinema in #Berlin, namely the #Zoopalast on Hardenbergstrasse in the Charlottenburg district. The well-known cinema, which is also the venue for the annual Berlinale film festival, is located on the same site as the cinema that served as the #UfaPalast am Zoo, which #premiered major #films from early film history from 1919 onwards. It all began when Arthur Biberfeld (1874–1959) partially converted the original exhibition halls at the Zoological Garden into an part-movie theater in 1912 in order to be able to premiere the film #QuoVadis (director: Enrico Guazzoni). In 1919, the area was expanded into a cinema with 1,740 seats by the architect Max Bischoff (1875–after 1929) on behalf of #Ufa. That was the birth of the Ufa Palast, which was almost completely destroyed during World War II in 1943. Today's Zoopalast is a #rebuilding on the same site and was reopened in 1957 according to designs by the architects Paul Schwebes, Gerhard Frische and Hans Schoszberger. The Ufa-Palast could boast of being the location of the premiere of several #milestones in #filmhistory. In 1919, the historical movie "#MadameDubarry" , directed by Ernst #Lubitsch and starring the Polish actress #PolaNegri in the leading role, premiered in Berlin's Ufa Palace. Still during the #WeimarRepublic, other famous films followed that are still valued important #classics today, such as the 1920 expressionist cinematic work of art "The #Golem: How He Came into the World" by the directors Paul Wegener and Carl Boese. It was the third part of a film series about the golem. In 1927, another very famous movie, the monumental film classic "#Metropolis", directed by Fritz Lang, had its premiere here. These were golden times for the cinema located in the middle of Germany's capital. But it also needed to experience much darker times, which the Ufa Palast finally even did not survive. Unfortunately, the Ufa-Palast in Nazi Germany also experienced some #inglorious highlights. In some cases, the production of well-known #propaganda films, some with serious anti-Semitic content, was personally commissioned by the Reich Propaganda Director and President of the Reichskulturkammer Joseph #Goebbels. The propaganda films "#JudSüß" (1940) directed by Veit Harlan and in the same year the film "The Eternal Jew" by the National Socialist director and film politician Fritz Hippler were shown for their first time in Berlin's Ufa Palace. Both films were milestones in #antiSemitic incitement. After the new building opened in 1957, now under the name Zoopalast, which is still used today, the cinema underwent extensive renovations and technical innovations in the 1970s and 1980s. The cinema finally closed in 2010. And again remarkable modifications to the building were carried out. In addition, existing cinema halls that were under monument protection were renovated. And five new halls were even newly added. Before it was closed, the cinema had lost importance and had only played not more than a minor role as a venue for the Berlinale film festival, but since 2014 as a newly renovated modern cinema it has become a well respected integral part of the famous international festival again.
