France to countries in Africa: WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR COLONIALISM! WE ARE NOT OUR ANCESTORS!
Also France to countries in Africa when they're collecting those colonial tax payments:
George Mason University is conducting an investigation into whether big-money donors have undue influence over academic matters, after documents were released showing that the Charles Koch Foundation had been given a voice in hiring and firing professors https://t.co/7M3HMT8Fhl
TOMS is a form of subtle #dependencytheory. while giving free shoes is good on the surface level, it takes business from local shoemakers. doesn’t empower local people, but forces them to be dependent @elps455@tavisjules
much like the tunisian youth in our readings, the parkland students using social media to propel reform is a key part of #postmodernism as they are combatting the current narrative with their mini narratives @elps455@tavisjules
the theme of ppl with $ holding educational policy control in this week’s readings eerily reminds me of the control that rahm’s appointed education board has over CPS @elps455@tavisjules
under my previous assumption abt dependency theory, does that imply core countries take steps to keep peripheral countries peripheral so they/we can keep their/our status as “educational powerhouses” in order to take int’l student $$? #neocolonialism 🤔 @elps455@tavisjules
perhaps dependency theory extends past raw resources if core countries depend on $ from the peripheral elite that are able to come to core countries for education. (2/2) @elps455@tavisjules
international student enrollment is dropping in US, causing a lot of financial distress in higher ed as int'l students pay higher tuition rates & don't qualify for fafsa. losing int'l students = losing $. (1/2) @elps455@tavisjules
I wonder if my white friends in foreign countries are perceived as more credible in their English teaching capabilities than my non white friends, even though they both were born and raised in the US, because of this colonialistic mindset
was beginning to wonder how all my friends teaching English in other countries got jobs so quickly and without teacher certification but remembered the impact of colonialism on foreign education as we are seen as a “educational powerhouse” @tavisjules@elps455
also interesting to note that the vietnamese words for french-introduced things are very close to the french word itself. ex. cheese: fromage vs phô mai, carrot: carotte vs cà rốt
@elps455@tavisjules
interesting to think of language as a means of colonialization:
my family is from vietnam and as a former french colony, it makes sense that my grandma speaks french, vietnamese, and english
@elps455@tavisjules
hints of conflict theory as well; as fluency in internet culture/social media becomes increasingly valued in the future job market, it must be noted that students admitted into the program must posses the economic, cultural, and social capital that allows them to get there
northwestern now offers a degree in memes within their school of communication: a byproduct of structuralism in education as memes were given meaning through the structure of technology and internet culture- but now one can get accredited for memes at a top tier school @elps455
