Today Fitch Ratings downgraded the United States’ long-term foreign currency issuer default rating from AAA to AA+ due to anticipated fiscal deterioration, governance erosion, and rising debt over the next three years. This announcement led to a steep dip in U.S. stock stocks across the board. However, this is not a reason to sell IMO.

While rating agencies assess credit risk, it’s the market, with its of buyers and sellers, that truly determines the cost of borrowing. A downgrade might affect initial market sentiment but doesn’t significantly impact the long-term fundamentals of individual companies. For example, Tesla will be fine with it’s financial war chest. On top of this, despite the downgrade, U.S. is still the strongest economies, relative to other countries and thus, the US dollar remains the world’s reserve currency, and U.S. Treasury bonds are still seen as one of the safest investments globally. As proof, in 2011, when Standard & Poor’s downgraded the U.S. credit rating, it initially rattled markets, but stocks eventually rebounded and continued to climb in the following years. Remember, downgrades do not necessarily result in prolonged market downturns!

This is why it’s important to always take a long-term view in investing and not be swayed by short-term market fluctuations. Take advantage of these opportunities to own the best companies of the future on the low, bc time in the market > timing the market in the long run. Don’t lose faith in the United States of America! 🇺🇸⚡️
