Never donated to Amazing Facts, but I supported a smaller independent evangelist who taught all the same things.
Now, my donations go to secular nonprofits making tangible (and often immediate) differences in people’s lives.
@stackerco@kyzabee They’ve also both faced allegations of plagiarism. I don’t know much about JS’ plagiarism allegations, but at least in EGW’s case, there are a number of well-documented instances of plagiarism.
SDAs also use the “she had so little education, and yet she wrote so much” argument.
@stackerco@kyzabee FWIW, as an ex-SDA with surface-level knowledge of Mormon history, I do think it’s fair to compare EGW and Joseph Smith. They both came from the same region and time period and had some overlapping interests (e.g. EGW’s health message / JS’ Word of Wisdom).
@stackerco@kyzabee Also it’s inaccurate to frame her writings as just “theological discussions” - she often said that her writings came from God. Some of her most important writings allegedly came from visions given to her by God.
@stackerco@kyzabee But in many SDA churches, I’d say EGW’s writings are often treated as scripture because she is quoted right alongside the Bible. Her writings fundamentally shape how SDAs view theology and eschatology.
@BlackLabelAdvsr@LauraRbnsn I know, how dare a New Testament scholar contradict your feelings? You’re an Amazon & Walmart Advisor for Elite Brands! 😭
@stackerco@BasicBaptistGuy@jesse_k_fox@pimitopomo@Jerome16235677 But many ex-Adventists do find themselves being ignored or forgotten by people they considered church friends.
That’s been my experience - unless if I show up at church for a funeral, I essentially have zero contact with all of the SDAs I grew up around.
@stackerco@BasicBaptistGuy@jesse_k_fox@pimitopomo@Jerome16235677 I forgot to mention that there’s no church-wide policy of shunning or prohibition on engaging with apostates. At least every 1-2 months, current SDAs will chime in on r/exAdventist to ask questions like “Why’d you leave?” or to proselytize.
@CivilizationSOS @ArnoldCarton@Channel4News Ex-Muslim “atheist” using religious texts to justify settler colonialism and ethnic cleansing. You’re not living up to the “free thinker” in your bio.
Over the last year, Palestinian farmer Saeed al-Amour has attempted to defend his land in the occupied West Bank, as settler attacks have become more frequent and violent.
His olive groves near the Palestinian town of Al-Rakeez have become a target for Israelis from the illegal settlement of Avigayil, a kilometre away.
Warning: this report contains distressing scenes of violence.
