What this man is accused of doing is horrific. But does that give police the right to become judge and executioner themselves?

The man seen being tied up and allegedly beaten by police has been identified in reports as Faizal, also known as Khatki Rafiq Lakhani.

He is accused of brutally attacking his live-in partner, Kajalben Baraiya, at a bus station in Bhavnagar on September 3.

According to reports, CCTV captured him repeatedly assaulting her in public.

She later died from her injuries.

If proven, what happened to this woman is absolutely horrific and he should face the full consequences of the law.

But then came these images.

He appears tied up while police officers stand around him, with lathis visible nearby.

And this is where I think an important line has to be drawn.

India has courts for a reason.

Police can arrest a suspect and use reasonable force when necessary, but beating or publicly humiliating someone is not a legal punishment.

For me, condemning what he allegedly did and condemning police brutality are not contradictory positions.

A terrible crime deserves justice.
It doesn’t give anyone permission to replace justice with revenge.

Otherwise, where do we draw the line?
