President Tinubu approves salary increases for armed forces personnel

President Bola Tinubu has approved salary increases of between 30 and 80 per cent for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel.

About 250,000 personnel are to benefit from the new deal.

Under the new arrangement, which becomes effective from September 1, officers above the rank of colonel will enjoy a 30 per cent salary increase. This applies to Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals.

Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will have a 50 per cent increase, while Private to Staff Sergeant will have an 80 per cent increase.

The pay package will increase the yearly salary bill for the country's armed forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion.

President Tinubu has always praised the courage and sacrifices of members of the armed forces as they confront the scourge of banditry, kidnapping and terrorism in some parts of the country.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation.

“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians

“ I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation”.

For years, one recurring story followed Team Nigeria to major international competitions: complaints about poor welfare, inadequate camping arrangements, delayed allowances, and unpaid bonuses. Those distractions often took attention away from the athletes' performances.

This time, the story was different.

At the just-concluded 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria competed without the familiar controversies over welfare. The FG ensured that athletes were well catered for, incentives were provided, and winning bonuses were paid. The result was a team that could focus on what truly mattered, representing Nigeria with excellence.

The outcome speaks for itself. Nigeria emerged as the highest-ranked African nation on the medals table, a testament to the talent, resilience, and determination of our athletes.

Congratulations to every member of Team Nigeria for making the country proud. Congratulations to the leadership of the National Sports Commission for demonstrating that proper planning, athlete welfare, and effective administration produce results. Their commitment created an environment where excellence could thrive.

Above all, commendation goes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting policies and investments that gave our athletes the confidence to compete without unnecessary distractions.

This is an important lesson: when athletes are treated with dignity, adequately supported, and motivated, they repay the nation with podium finishes and national pride.

May this become the new standard for Nigerian sports.

Definitely a post that comes from the deepest places of ignorance.

The model for repayment of students loan when eventually due is well stated in the act that created the scheme.

- Only 10% of salaries/income would be paid on a monthly basis until full payment is achieved.
- ⁠That will only happen two years after completion of NYSC.

In cases where such persons remain unemployed, no payment will be made.

Apart from making the loan an interest free one, the President has also made the repayment as seamless as possible which makes it one of the best students loan model in the world.

Like it did with the tax reform acts despite all the misinformation, time will also tell how much of ignorance this tweet and others like it will be.

Till then, let the lucky students enjoy the game-changing scheme.

Some relationships are simply priceless.

My Egbon, Idris Olorunnimbe, introduced me to his aburo, Tola Odeyemi, when she was appointed as the CEO of NIPOST. From that moment, ‘the aburo’ has been a strong supporter of everything I do, and I will never take that kindness for granted.

I am sure you all know that my Egbon is the Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission? Yes, I say it with pride. Even after I moved to Abuja to work under another mentor, Asoju Oba has continued to look out for me, checking in, offering guidance, and more times than I can count, sending me money just to make sure I am fine. I do not take that love and generosity for granted. I know how fortunate I am.

Yesterday, it was heartwarming to see our Egbon pay a courtesy visit to his aburo at the NIPOST Hqtrs. Seeing two people I deeply respect together was a reminder that genuine relationships, and mentorship are invaluable.

May we all be blessed with people who believe in us, support us, and celebrate our growth. Abbey, I see you too 😀😀
