Although tea is Kenya’s leading agricultural export and second-largest foreign exchange earner, the industry continues to rely heavily on firewood to generate the heat required for the tea withering process. This has heightened the need for cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions that can reduce the industry's environmental footprint.

Dr. Godfrey Kabungo, a Chemical Engineering Lecturer at @DeKUTkenya and @kenet_ke Research Grantee, is responding to this challenge through his solar-powered tea withering solution. The project aims to replace conventional biomass heating with solar energy, and thus reduce carbon emissions, ease pressure on forest resources, and promote a more sustainable tea industry.
