“No child should ever die simply because they went to school. No student should have to fear that walking into a classroom could cost them their life.”

This was the statement issued today by Akbayan Party as it called for stronger measures to keep schools safe and prevent children and young people from accessing firearms following the shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City on Tuesday, August 18.

Two students were killed in the incident, including the alleged shooter, who was reported to be a Grade 7 student. The shooting marks the second school shooting in the Philippines in less than two months, following the deadly attack at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City in June.

Akbayan President Rafaela David expressed her condolences to the victims, their families, and the school community, stressing that schools must remain safe spaces where children can learn without fear. “Napakasakit isipin na sa loob mismo ng paaralan, kung saan dapat ligtas ang mga bata, may ganitong karahasan. Schools should be safe spaces for learning, not places where our children have to fear for their lives,” David said.

David called for justice for the victims and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including how the Grade 7 student was able to gain access to a firearm. She said authorities must strengthen safeguards to prevent children from accessing guns in the first place.

Akbayan also called on Congress to pass the Child Safety Against Gun Violence Act, which seeks to strengthen safeguards against children’s access to firearms and protect them from gun-related violence. The party said Congress must act urgently to close gaps in existing gun safety measures. It likewise called for greater government funding for mental health, psychosocial support, and early intervention programs.

“Hindi dapat maging normal ang ganitong karahasan sa ating mga paaralan. Every child deserves to go to school and come home safely. We need to make schools safer and to keep guns away from children. That is what our children and their families deserve,” David said.
