[BUCHANAN: Dublin Time Machine @RobLooseCannon]

In 1963, Shan Mohangi was a 22 year old South African medical student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. He lived at 95 Harcourt Street and was working nights as a part-time chef in the restaurant in the basement of his building, the Green Tureen.

His girlfriend was a 15 year old girl called Hazel Mullen. She worked at the same restaurant. She was reported missing after meeting him in his flat, and thick smoke was observed rising from the restaurant's ovens. He strangled her to death in a jealous rage, then he dismembered her body and tried to burn the remains in the restaurant's oven.

Mohangi was convicted of murder and received the mandatory sentence of death by hanging. The verdict was appealed arguing that evidence did not support deliberate intent, which prompted the Court of Criminal Appeal to reduce the conviction to manslaughter and the sentence cut to seven years.

Political debate around the case was one of catalysts for the passage of the Criminal Justice Act 1964, which effectively restricted capital punishment in Ireland. He served just four years in Mountjoy then was quietly released and deported back to South Africa.

Mohangi changed his name to Narentuk Jumuna, built a successful business in Natal, and quietly worked his way into politics, serving at one point as an MP in the old House of Delegates, the apartheid parliament's chamber reserved for Indian South Africans. In 1996 the National Party in KwaZulu-Natal suspended him over separate fraud claims but they couldnt make any of it stick.

By 2009, aged sixty-nine, he was standing as a candidate for the Independent Democrats, the party founded by Patricia De Lille. Then the Saturday Star ran the story. ID secretary-general Haniff Hoosen confronted him directly, and "Jumuna" folded immediately, admitting he was Shan Mohangi and resigning on the spot.

Hoosen laid fraud charges against him for concealing the conviction from the party. Under South African law, Mohangi was entitled to stand regardless. His sentence had ended decades before, and nothing barred a child killer convicted in Dublin from running for office in Durban.
