I teach English as a Second Language to 6-8 grade students. This is my first time in many years to teach middle school. Now that I have been in my room and gotten to know my students I have added and deleted items from my list. Thank you!

Mattering is feeling both valued AND knowing that you add value. Adults need to feel they matter but students do too!
Mattering creates a greater sense of connection and feelings of belonging. People of all ages benefit from knowing their presence makes a difference.
How do students at your school know that they are important members of the group?

As you #ReadAcrossAmerica, analyze the books you choose. Culturally inclusive or diverse books are not just for #Multilinguals.
ALL learners benefit from hearing stories & #reading books abt people who are different from them.
Empathy is grown from stepping in the shoes of others & walking in them.
Books build #empathy.
When students join our schools and classrooms with language, let's invite it with open arms! Let's celebrate and position them based on their strengths.
Learning English (or any language) should not come at the expense of the students' first language.

One year ago, Equitable Instruction for English Learners in the Content Areas was released into the world, and I still can’t quite believe it.
This book was written with teachers in mind: teachers who care deeply about their students, who want to do right by multilingual learners, and who know that equity in content classrooms isn’t an “extra”…it’s essential.
Over the past year, this book has made its way into classrooms, professional learning communities, universities, and conversations about what truly equitable instruction can look like in math, science, social studies, and beyond. That is both humbling and energizing.
Thank you to every educator who has read it, shared it, studied it with colleagues, and most importantly brought its ideas to life for students. Your work is what gives this book meaning.
This wouldn’t be possible without @routledgebooks , an incredible publisher. Here’s to one year of learning, growing, and advocating for multilingual learners and to many more ahead. ♥️🌎🙌🏽

Celebrating, honoring, & valuing other languages doesn’t take away from the beauty of your own. It does not dim your light or make your language less important. No, when we recognize that language is a powerful part of identity, culture, & connection, we create space for every voice to shine. We can build communities where multilingualism is accepted, invited, & embraced as a STRENGTH rather than something to be feared. ♥️ Valentina
Comprehension checks are a quick way to monitor students' understanding in real time, whether in literacy lessons, content-area classes, or classroom activities.
