Well, because I happen to believe using the correct words and terms are important. An officer gets his authority directly from the President of the United States, and therefore cannot be "discharged" from a contract. They are dismissed by a General Court Martial (the highest procedure). It drives home the fact that they have lost any and all "Command authority". I freely admit that most civilians wouldn't care about the distinction, which is military tradition and legalese, but I offered it for those that would find it interesting. Thanks for asking!
