How many Reform UK voters know that Robert Jenrick once worked in Moscow as a corporate lawyer for firms handling oligarch clients?

This Private Eye item from 2020 reads somewhat differently now. At the time it was a minor scandal: 'Honest Bob' Jenrick, a Moscow-trained corporate lawyer turned MP, accepted £5,000 from Alexander Knaster, the former CEO of Alfa Bank, in the run-up to the 2015 election, the only time Knaster had ever donated to an individual MP's office despite being a long-standing Tory donor.

Jenrick's wife, Michal Berkner, had been a partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, acting for the Alfa Group at one point, before later moves to Cooley, McDermott Will & Emery, and now Baker McKenzie.

The piece's closing line, about "a certain suppressed report on Russian influence in British politics," was a pointed reference to the still-unpublished Russia Report.

What has happened since gives the story more weight than Private Eye could have known.

After the 2022 invasion, the US and UK sanctioned Alfa Group's principals, including Mikhail Fridman, the bank's co-founder, who was arrested by the National Crime Agency at his London home that December. He left the UK for good in 2023 and now lives in Moscow.

Knaster's own firm, Pamplona Capital, was drawn directly into the fallout: Goldman Sachs and Kirkland & Ellis both cut ties once it emerged that roughly 80% of Pamplona's funds traced back to Fridman's LetterOne vehicle, and Pamplona has since moved to wind down and buy out those stakes.

Knaster himself was never sanctioned. But the wider network his 2015 donation sat within has since been treated by Western governments and banks as exactly the kind of Russian-adjacent capital the original piece was needling at.

It's also worth noting the company Jenrick now keeps.

As Reform UK's Treasury spokesperson, he sits in a party whose former leader in Wales, Nathan Gill, was jailed for ten and a half years in November 2025 for taking bribes from a pro-Russian Ukrainian politician to make pro-Kremlin statements in the European Parliament, a case serious enough to trigger a government review into foreign interference in UK politics.

There is no suggestion that Gill and Jenrick's paths crossed on this. But a party built partly on hard sovereignty rhetoric now has, in its recent history, both a convicted case of Russian-linked corruption and a senior figure whose early career was boosted by Kremlin-adjacent money.

That pattern, not any direct link, is the point worth making.

After the referendum, the BBC chief Lord Hall ordered the BBC to treat Brexit as a done deal, a decision which all but wholly excluded Remainer opinion from the BBC for around 2 years, thus grossly biasing the Brexit debate. It was a grotesque abuse of democracy.

The BBC justified its policy on the grounds that it was simply going back to devoting most of its coverage to the two main parties, which by coincidence had both become militantly pro-Brexit. So the roughly 50% of the public who supported Remain were almost totally silenced.

Contrast that with the treatment of Farage who has had very few MPs and far less support than Remain had, and yet the BBC has given him a very high level of coverage. The standards it applied to silence Remainers, it completely abandoned in its promotion of Farage.

The BBC's double standards perverted the Brexit debate, and very likely influenced the final outcome. And while it suppressed Remainer voices the BBC eagerly took over from Russian TV in promoting Farage.

The BBC's subservience to a right-wing, and at times, fascist agenda, has done immeasurable damage to our country.
