I'm about 90% sure this site is done for, so uh.... if anyone needs me, I'm hedgeberg#7337 on discord. That's p much it. Best of luck, all, it's been good.
@daeken "Nope, clearly it's just a joke and I just put myself at risk of being targetted by bigots for the sake of the meme. Haha! Funny, right? Glad you got the joke, I was worried people would take it seriously and respect my life decisions (:"
A really phenomenal article that captures the essence of who Near was as a person, and that takes the time to explain both what we lost and why we lost them.
I'm still reeling, but I'm slowly getting better. Something about reading an account like this helps, despite the pain.
"Over several weeks of reporting, I came to know a person of immense talent who was also in constant, undeniable pain at the hands of the internet." https://t.co/qiH8q1Zybm
@realjumy Yeah, I fully agree with that, if I'm understanding what you're saying correctly. Problem is, they're not going to be better, and that means we need to figure out some way to defend our own or deter the threat.
CW: near and recent events. This is what Near was struggling with. This is what we need to be thinking about. These are people who are active in our community and KF gives them an outlet to coordinate vitriol of a sort that's hard to comprehend.
@lilythekitten The shit-eatting monsters from the site that did this to Near? They went where they knew they would find like minds, and couldn't be shamed for their cruelty. So we make the scene hostile for them. Make it impossible for them to show their faces anywhere outside of their shithole
@lilythekitten For once on this miserable hell website, for a full 24 hours, I saw community solidarity. Odds are it goes away just as fast. But if we can rally as a community in a way that keeps some of that momentum, I think that is a real start toward lasting progress.
@realjumy Yes, but "don't be a piece of shit" isn't a solution. They're going to keep being pieces of shit. That means now we need to figure out how to step up to keep our own safe. Otherwise this is going to happen again and keep happening.
@HackerVilela I can't imagine this is harder for anyone than it is for those of you who worked closest with them. We lost someone who was special beyond words. Please stay safe.
I saw Near as a friend for their kindness, and as an inspiration for their technical insight. Now they're gone, and we are all so much worse for the loss.
I posted the following announcement to the ReSwitched discord earlier in acknowledgement of the loss of Near, a beloved community member and friend. If you are in the hacking community, I ask that you give it a read:

I'm still collecting my thoughts, as are most of us. This is going to take a lot of time to unpack and it's not going to be easy doing so while processing the initial grief.
@szeloof Wonder if there's any data on how the direction of the cut (e.g. along vs. opposed to the grain) or the species of the tree affects this response...
