Today, our nation mourns the passing of a towering statesman, a gallant fighter for democracy, and a son of Kenya whose life was defined by courage, conviction, and an unyielding love for his country, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga.
I have walked a long and eventful journey alongside Raila, at times as an ally, at times on different political paths, but always with deep mutual respect and a shared commitment to the ideals of a free, just, and prosperous Kenya. We worked together in government and in opposition, in moments of great national triumph and in difficult chapters of our history. Through it all, his resilience, political acumen, and unwavering belief in the power of the people remained constant.
Raila was the pre-eminent statesman of Kenya, who sacrificed personal ambition for the nation, not once, not twice, but time and again. Whenever the soul of our nation stood on the brink of disintegration, he recalibrated his political path to safeguard its unity.
Raila’s voice echoed hope to millions, a name forever synonymous with democracy, social justice, and human rights. His legacy will endure in the democratic gains he championed, the bridges he built, and the generations he inspired to believe in a better Kenya.
On behalf of my wife Tessie, my family, the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, and in my personal capacity, I extend heartfelt condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the entire Odinga family, his supporters across the country, and the people of Kenya.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
May Kenya find strength in his enduring legacy.
MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE FROM H.E. UHURU KENYATTA FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF FORMER PRIME MINISTER HON. RAILA AMOLO ODINGA.
My heart is heavy, and my spirit is burdened with a grief that is both profound and deeply personal. The news of Raila’s passing has left a silence that echoes across our nation, a silence where once there was a voice of thunder and conviction.
To me, Raila was more than a political colleague; he was a defining part of my own journey, in public service and in life. Raila and I were navigators on opposing currents, charting different courses for the nation we both loved. At some point along that journey, we became political opponents and often, the weight of that competition felt immense.
Baba, as we fondly referred to him, was a man who made you sharpen your own ideas, compelling you to defend your positions with rigor and passion.
However, in the recent years, a different bond was forged; one of respect, of shared patriotism, and a common desire to see a united Kenya.
That journey from fierce political opponents to partners in the pursuit of “Handshake” unity taught me the true measure of the man. I saw firsthand his unwavering passion for this country, his deep-seated belief in justice, and his incredible capacity to think beyond personal ambition for the sake of national peace. He was a formidable opponent, but he was an even more invaluable ally in the cause of reconciliation.
I have lost a friend and a brother. I will miss our conversations sometimes challenging, always insightful and the fire of belief that never left his eyes.
To Mama Ida, the children, and the entire Odinga family, I extend my deepest, most heartfelt condolences. You have shared Baba with Kenya for a lifetime, and we mourn with you. We have lost a father to the nation, a steadfast champion for the people, and a true son of Kenya.
His legacy is not just in the political battles he fought, but in the peace he helped build. It is etched in the very fabric of our nation. Rest in peace, my brother. Your work here is done, but your echo will never fade.
H.E. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, C.G.H
4th President of the Republic of Kenya

Kenya has lost one of its greatest sons, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga.
Raila was a man whose courage, conviction and compassion defined generations.
Through storms and triumphs alike, he carried the hope of a people and the vision of a nation yet to be.
For me, his passing is deeply personal. Baba played a big role in my 20-year political journey; a father, teacher and mentor who believed in my potential when few did.
He personally inducted me as a member of Dujis in 2007, setting me on a path of service that continues to this day.
My family and I remain forever indebted to him for the guidance, faith and warmth he extended so generously.
As we mourn his departure, we celebrate a legacy that transcends politics. A legacy of courage, principle and unwavering love for Kenya.
May the memory of Hon. Raila continue to guide our nation toward unity and freedom.
Rest well, Baba.

{For Immediate Release}
CONDOLENCE MESSAGE FOLLOWING THE PASSING ON OF RT HON. RAILA AMOLO ODINGA, EGH, SECOND PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA.
I received the devastating news of the death of the Second Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya and my dear brother, Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga this morning, upon my arrival at Heathrow International Airport, London, United Kingdom where I am on a scheduled 10-day programme.
Rt Hon Odinga, fondly referred to for decades as ‘Baba’ by his ardent supporters, family and friends, and, albeit begrudging in admiration by his most-fiercest detractors, was more than an enigma. Baba was a force of nature that kept on going and going, despite and in spite of the hurdles put in front of him.
Baba was the longest suffering political detainee in Kenya. At the heart of the struggle for multipartyism, Raila’s body bore the scars of the slings and arrows, bullets and batons, that no man or woman should ever endure. Yet, at each point of release from the detention cells and torture chambers, he would raise his arms up to the heavens, his fist clenched in determination; resolved that the tears and painful scars he personally suffered, would yield to democracy and freedom for his beloved Kenya. That is why we call him the Champion of the Second Political Liberation.
Baba’s physical and mental struggle for Kenya - well documented nationally and internationally - earned him the title ‘Agwambo’.
In the years I interacted with Agwambo professionally in Kenya’s political space, I got to understand why he was referred to as that. From the Opposition benches to the Government side as Prime Minister, to August 27, 2010, the day our New Constitution was promulgated, my brother Raila, played an instrumental and integral role in devolving power from an imperial presidency to a people’s centred constitutional order. For that, we owe him our immense gratitude.
Since 2013, I had the singular privilege of working very closely and passionately with my brother, twice as his running mate both in CORD and NASA, as well as his partner in the Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya Coalition.
We learnt a lot from each other, and, shared a lot of pain together.
To Mama Ida, and the entire family, in particular Rosemary, Raila Junior and Winne, as much as I cannot imagine the shock and the heartbreak that you are currently going through, I want you to know that my family and I stand in solidarity with you. In this regard, I know that all Kenyans are praying for you.
Kenya has lost an exemplary leader, the President who won but was never declared and sworn into office. The loss of Rt Hon Raila Odinga is not only a loss to his family and country, but also to the entire African continent.
I will miss my brother and friend dearly.
I am therefore rearranging my schedule of engagements in the United Kingdom in honour of my fallen brother.
May God rest the soul of Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in everlasting peace.
HE Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, EGH, SC, CS.
Tenth Vice President of the Republic of Kenya,
Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) Party Leader.
A somber day for Kenya and Africa. We have lost a giant, a Kenyan icon and a continental statesman. Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga was more than a leader; he was a fearless fighter for justice, a unifying voice for our nation, and a relentless champion of democracy.
His courage and vision shaped the Kenya we know today, heralding the birth of our robust Constitution and expanding the freedoms we now enjoy. Raila always put the nation first, standing for peace, unity, and accountability.
Though he has rested, his legacy will forever inspire generations to stand tall for what is right. Rest in power, Baba
