Pokemon fun fact #24:

Pokemon Gold & Silver were originally planned to be the final Pokemon games ever made.

The developers believed the story would end with Johto, which is one reason the games feel like such a grand finale. After becoming Champion, players could return to the entire Kanto region and eventually battle Red, the hero from Pokemon Red & Blue.

Many fans don't realize that Gold & Silver were designed as a celebration of everything Pokemon had become, because nobody knew if there would ever be another generation.

i was today years old when i found out you can battle professor oak in pokemon red and blue. and my childhood just broke open a little.

the theory is that oak was originally meant to be the final challenge of the game. not blue. the professor you trusted from the very beginning waiting for you at the end.

they cut it but it’s still in the code.

you can trigger it through the trainer fly glitch:
1. don’t fight the gambler on route 8. have a pokemon with a special stat of 226.
2. walk into the gambler’s line of sight and press start simultaneously to fly to fuchsia city. battle a trainer on route 13 or 15 to fix the menu.
3. go to route 7. a wild ditto appears. let it copy your pokemon with the 226 special stat then defeat it.
4. fly to lavender town and walk west onto route 7. the menu pops up. close it.
professor oak appears.

or use gameshark code 01E2D8CF if you want the shortcut. the final boss was always oak.
