Over the last year it's become crystal clear that most ecom brands struggle to hire creative strategists for one simple reason:
They're looking for unicorns.
Here's what I mean by thatโฆ
Let's say you're doing $80k/day and you onboard a creative strategist.
You may be able to pump more concepts out and get some of your time or your team's time back.
But as most creative strategists are creatives and not data people - you still end up with the same problem...
You're still throwing sh*t at the wall hoping for something to stick.
Even with plenty of strategists on any account... the win rate is abysmal.
Most brands have no idea what the data is telling them.
I just ask simple questions like: "Do you guys do tracking of performance per creator, angle, ICP, format, etc."
*Blank stare.*
"Okay, what about this.. do you know your distribution between different angles and ICPs and how do you track performance for each of them?"
"Uhhh... we dont but we should!"
And there's the bottleneck.
If you hire a creative strategist, don't expect them to make data-backed decisions like this by looking at TripleWhale or Northbeam.
Once you solve your data infra you'll not only be able to unlock scale.. but most of the creative strategists in the market even if they're a 7/10 at reading data will be able to unlock growth for you.
Cause they can focus on what they're best at- creative.
And they have clear data that informs what they test so you can predictably scale.
While it's true it's hard to find creative talent... it's only hard because you're looking for unicorns who are data people AND creatives... and this is incredibly hard.
Iโm a creative strategist and before this was a generalist DR copywriter for seven years, specializing in Ecom, bizopp and have worked with a lot of DTC supplement brands. DM for samples. Iโve written for RYZEand Resiliaโ2 of the top DTC brands out there right now. I donโt wanna leave my portfolio here because people straight rip shit off. ๐

How to never scale your DTC brand past $500K/month:
Step 1: Do your own creative strategy
Convince yourself no one can do it better than you.
Step 2: Hire a junior strategist
Wonder why performance doesn't improve.
Step 3: Micromanage every brief
Because you don't actually trust them.
Step 4: Say you'll hire better talent next quarter
Right after you fix the funnel, restructure the team, replatform the store.
Step 5: Keep running the same 3 concepts
While your competitors are testing 60/month.
Then wonder why you can't scale.
