🗣️ Reporter: “Cristiano, many people were surprised to see you come off at half-time. Why did Ange make that decision?”

🗣️ Cristiano Ronaldo: “We already had our goalkeeper sent off with a red card, so the situation completely changed. We needed to manage the game differently and have more legs in certain areas of the pitch.

“The coach had a plan for how he wanted us to attack with ten men, and sometimes you have to understand that the team is bigger than one player. Because the attention from Al-Ettifaq was heavily focused on me, removing me could actually create more space for the other players.

“If I stay on the pitch, maybe two defenders continue following me everywhere. When I come off, suddenly they have to think about someone else. That can open the game for the players coming from midfield and the wings.

“Of course, as a player, you always want to stay on the pitch, especially when the team is losing. [laughs] But I understood the decision. Ange was thinking about how we could win the match, not about Cristiano Ronaldo playing 90 minutes.

“And honestly, when you have ten men and you’re chasing a comeback, you need players who can run, press and attack the spaces. The important thing is that the team believed. We changed the approach, we fought until the end and we got the result.

“Sometimes the best way to help your team win is not to be on the pitch. Tonight, I trusted the coach, the players trusted each other, and that is why we came back.”
