Two years later, and I can't stop asking myself the same question

Why did we let them die for nothing?

Young Kenyans walked into the streets knowing they might never make it back home. Some didn't. They gave up their futures because they believed Kenya deserved better. They believed we deserved better.

Today we post candles, flags, and hashtags in their memory. Tomorrow we go back to cheering the very political culture they stood against.

How did we get here?

How did the outrage become entertainment?
How did accountability become optional?
How did we allow ourselves to be divided again by the same old politics, the same empty promises, the same familiar faces?

The greatest betrayal won't be what happened 2 yrs ago!

The greatest betrayal will be if we learn nothing from it.

If we walk into the next election and reward the same politics whether from those in government or those in opposition we won't just be electing leaders. We'll be telling every family that buried a son, a daughter, a brother, or a sister that their sacrifice changed nothing.

They didn't give their lives so we could return to business as usual.

They died believing Kenya could be different.

The question is: Do we still believe that?

May we never reduce their sacrifice to an annual hashtag.

May we become the citizens they believed we could be.
