I have discovered Nålbind. Which is old Norse knitting using one’s thumb and a darning needle. My aim is a Viking hat, but it is not going to be finished soon. It is incredibly fiddly. This pic is a fifteenth attempt.

I met the cat-who-hates-me yesterday for the first time since she was spayed, and she was perfectly friendly. Her personality has transformed. She now likes people (but still kills mice) Is there a larger lesson here?

I was asked to make Typhoid Mary's signature Peach Ice Cream. No sweet ripe peaches yet so I substituted strawberries. Turned out to be iced cream, not ice cream. So I made an egg custard, but over-cooked it and now have a scrambled egg strawberry ice. Living history is a process

@RupertLowe10 Without the foreign nationals on zero hours contracts working difficult jobs for lousy wages, many of our businesses would fold. Without a living wage their workers depend on universal credit to survive. We are subsidising the businesses not the foreign nationals.

You ask why spay a 5 year old cat? Well she has recently moved to a house with enhanced opportunities to evade her owner's vigilance. She has turned out to be a complete tart, and moreover consistently fails to get her kittens' fathers' names and addresses.

I have it. I'm in the Map room as the plan is too long for the tables in Manuscripts. Here is a snapshot from the west bank of the river Hull in 1540. I think it is about Scale Lane staithe. Well worth the hassle anyway.

Finally I'm back at the coal-face of historical research and the BL is still pretty chaotic. I had total faith in my reference (from a meticulous historian of the 1890s). It took half an hour to convince the BL and now, an hour later, they have lost their printed delivery slip

The historian was J R Boyle and this is from his tracing of Rogers's plan of the River Hull. I hope to see the original sometime today. It really is Cotton Augustus I Supplement 4. Honest. The BL computers are still terrible but the staff are trying hard.
