The architects of the United States Constitution did not just predict the political rise of Donald Trump; they explicitly engineered the American republic to stop him. When Alexander Hamilton wrote in Federalist No. 1 of men who "commence demagogues and end despots," he was describing the specific vulnerability that has now fractured the American experiment. With the dramatic expansion of executive power during Trump's second term, the systemic safeguards of the nation are facing their most severe constitutional stress test.

Hamilton's Warning Fulfilled

In 1792, Hamilton sent a letter to George Washington detailing a precise psychological profile of the man who could destroy the republic from within. He warned of a political actor who is "unprincipled in private life, desperate in his fortune, bold in his temper... despotic in his ordinary demeanour." Hamilton cautioned that this figure would use popularity to undermine democratic norms:

"...he mounts the hobby horse of popularity — he trips up the heels of all who stand in his way — and keeps the court to the people till he can grip the power."

Trump's political strategy relies directly on this dynamic. By systematically attacking the judiciary, law enforcement, and electoral integrity, his movement has convinced millions that the system itself is the enemy, making the executive branch the sole arbiter of truth and authority.

The Collapse of Separation of Powers

The Framers built a government of co-equal branches, operating under the assumption that Congress and the courts would jealously guard their own power against executive overreach. That defensive shield has broken down. The current administration has aggressively expanded the boundaries of the "unitary executive," effectively bypassing traditional legislative oversight.

This authoritarian consolidation manifests in three distinct crises:

ㆍ The Weaponization of the Purse: By utilizing sweeping executive directives and radical policy blueprints like Project 2025, the administration has hijacked federal funding structures. The White House has actively threatened to withhold over $1 trillion in federal grants to state and local governments that refuse to align with its partisan and ideological demands.

ㆍ Domestic Military Enforcement: The administration's repeated threats and steps toward deploying federal troops on domestic soil under the Insurrection Act — frequently over the direct objections of state governors — have sparked widespread civil unrest and legal battles. This direct use of military force against American citizens realizes the Framers' deepest fears of a standing army turned inward.

ㆍ The "No Kings" Legal Rebellion: Mass nationwide protests under the "No Kings" banner highlight a deep public awareness that the presidency is operating outside the law. Emboldened by broad judicial rulings on presidential immunity, the White House has actively declared that traditional boundaries on executive authority no longer apply.

The Dictator the Constitution Couldn't Stop

George Washington used his Farewell Address to warn that hyper-partisanship would eventually enable "cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government."

The current political reality proves that the Framers' design had a fatal flaw. They assumed that institutional loyalty would always override party loyalty. Instead, partisan compliance has allowed Donald Trump to weaponize the presidency, turning the exact tools designed to protect the republic into the instruments of its dismantling.

Maureen Dowd has an op-ed in today’s New York Times entitled “Founding Father vs. Foundering Toddler” in which she compares and contrasts George Washington and Donald Trump. It includes quotes by author Ron Chernow who won a Pulitzer Prize for his biography of George Washington. Here are a few quotes (and a free link to the article is pasted below).

Ron Chernow: “I just can’t imagine two human beings who are more dissimilar than George Washington and Donald Trump. Washington was discreet, reserved, courteous — he avoided any kind of show or ostentation or self-promotion. With Donald Trump, it’s nonstop bragging and boasting and self-promotion that would have been, I think, completely alien to George Washington, and very much counter to his idea of the way that a public servant should behave.”

Maureen Dowd: “The hero who commanded the Continental Army was protective of the nascent democracy, realizing its fragility. Trump spoke at Mt. Rushmore last night after buzzing over it twice in the 747 sky palace he got from Qatar and you paid to refurbish and he plans to keep. He said that those who aren’t loyal to him and supportive of his debasement of the presidency and his assault on our democratic republic are communists. “The Communist Party is made up of illegal immigrants, criminals and everybody that doesn’t want to work. . . It’s death, tyranny and the pursuit of evil.” That’s a hell of a way to describe the majority of Americans on the eve of America’s birthday who see Donald Trump for who he really is.

Lindsay Chervinsky, the executive director of the George Washington Presidential Library, said this about how she believed George Washington would feel about America’s 250th birthday: “I think the dominant feeling would be one of joy that the nation is still here, because most republics just don’t last that long, and he knew that.”

It’s up to us to prevent the demagogue the Founding Fathers feared from destroying the fragile democracy that George Washington entrusted to us.
