What’s trending reminded me of what happened in Bournemouth years ago. Two girls went to a club and met two boys. I won’t mention race or names, so I’ll call them B1, G1, B2 and G2. They had fun in the club. In the morning, before leaving, the boys asked how old they were. The girls showed IDs saying they were old enough, so nobody thought twice.

Each girl went home with one boy: G1 with B1, G2 with B2. The next morning G1 asked B1 for £30,000 or she would call police, saying she didn’t know how she got there and that she was underage.

B1 said she had shown him ID the night before. She then produced her real ID showing she was underage. B1 thought he must have been very high, because he clearly remembered checking an ID so he started pleading.

B2 faced almost the same demand from G2. He said he didn’t even have £10,000 in his account. He started recording because something felt wrong. He asked what would happen if they couldn’t pay. She said if they didn’t pay she would go to police and accuse him of rape.

The boys refused. The girls went to police and showed their real IDs proving they were underage.

The boys were questioned. B2 had photographed the ID G2 showed him in the club. He told police she had shown him an ID the night before and produced the photo. The details were completely different from the real ID she now showed police.

He also played the recording from that morning, in which G2 asked for £30,000 and said they would go to police and accuse the boys of rape if it wasn’t paid.

Police then looked deeper: club CCTV, phones, messages and anything else from that night.

They invited the girls back. One admitted it wasn’t the first time. She said her friend had done it before and that they routinely did this to men they met on nights out, especially men they thought had money or would be too scared to involve police.

Police checked their financial records and found payments from different men, many arriving early in the morning. They contacted some of those men. At first some wouldn’t talk, but others eventually described the same pattern: they were asked for money after nights out and paid because they were scared, married, or thought it was easier than proving what happened.

Once police heard the same story from several men and saw the payments, the case changed. The boys were cleared. The investigation turned to the girls. They were charged, convicted and jailed.
