1. The documentary “Winter on Fire” has been a documentary Hong Kong protestors are watching. We understand how it feels to have a threatening neighbour and people’s will being suppressed by authoritarian power.
In Hong Kong, the authorities are right now arresting all the democratic nominees who participated in the primaries — 50 candidates! Hong Kong has just become the frontline of China’s new totalitarian state.
Participants of the 2020 Hong Kong pro-democracy primaries have been arrested by national security police early this morning, according to reports. They each have been alleged with a count of subversion, an offense under Beijing’s sweeping National Security Law.
The 50 people arrested this morning are the most vocal pro-democracy voices left in Hong Kong.
However, as they are arrested under the NSL, whether bail will be granted to them remains unknown.
Looking forward to response from Team @JoeBiden & the EU.
We strongly condemn the arrests of pro-democracy activists who stood in last year's democratic primaries. Beijing is once again undermining Hong Kong's democracy & breaching its obligations under the Sino-British Joint Declaration.
THREAD:
1. Thank you very much for all your support. It is my pleasure to gain the highest votes in the Time 100 Reader Poll this year. The result shows Hongkongers’ relentless passion for this city and our unwavering spirit of resistance.

After two-week detention in #China, still no update abt 12 HK #AsylumSeekers]
1. Only thing we know is they are all taken to detention centre in #Shenzhen & Chinese cops will decide whether to arrest them formally by Oct 1, according to #China’s law
Just in: @RFA_Chinese story says the some 10 people caught were Hong Kong protesters fleeing to Taiwan, including Andy Li, an activist who was arrested under the national security law on August 10 over alleged “collusion with foreign forces”

Interviewed with @thetimes, I explainedd the decision of my fleeing and my activism throughout the years in details. Watch this 3.5 minutes clip if you are interested in my story and the #NSL.

Chinese authorities have arrested media figure Jimmy Lai in Hong Kong, under the the new #NationalSecurityLaw.
Another deeply concerning move by Beijing, severely eroding freedom of speech and of assembly in #HongKong.
We will not stay silent.

With the arrest of Jimmy Lai China is driving Hong Kong further down a dead end street. Nothing to do with national security but an attempt to rule without even a show of legitimacy, let alone democracy.

Jimmy Lai: Hong Kong media tycoon arrested under new security law. Unless this legislation is applied fairly in HK, not as a way to intimidate dissenting voices, it will be impossible to view it as anything other than an attack on Democracy & Basic Law https://t.co/cCI3Hxp7wY
Another blow to the freedom of the press in #HongKong.
China is using its security law to crush democracy & the EU cannot remain silent. 🇭🇰 🇪🇺

The arrests of @JimmyLaiApple, his sons, @chowtingagnes & the police raid of @AppleDaily_hk are outrageous assaults on human rights & freedom of the press in #HongKong.
They should be freed immediately. International action is urgently needed to support the Hong Kong people!
